I had the stomach flu on Monday-Tuesday of this week. Becasue of this I missed a midterm. I’ve been trying to figure out getting documentation but nobody’s willing to help me on campus. We are on fall break so the health center has been closed since Wednesday. I didn’t go to the doctor on Tuesday because (1) I was contagious as hell and (2) I didn’t think I could walk across campus
Are they really gonna give me a note if I show up on Monday and say I was sick almost a week ago??
I’m just really frustrated cause I know I would’ve gotten an A on the test because it’s a super easy class. And I really dont wanna fail because I was sick one day.
Last year my daughter was really sick for a day (but not contagious) and feared she would miss two important exams. My husband called the health center to ask what they could do to assist her. They said if she felt too sick to come in to the health center or attend the exams, that she could call them and they would notify the professors and get a make up. She ended up going to take the exams anyway and went to the health center after for treatment. I know that doesn’t help you this minute, but call your health center them as soon as they open and see if they can assist you. Also write an email directly to the professor, he/she may be understanding.
These things are best handled proactively rather than after the fact. When my D was sick she was able to make arrangements for an alternate test day with the professor by letting him know she was ill in advance of the midterm. This particular professor did not ask her to get a doctor’s note. Did you contact (email) the professor ahead of time or did you just not show up for the exam?
Also did you contact health services (phone/email) when you were ill and ask what to do? Honestly I don’t think Health Services can do anything to support you this far after the fact.
At this point your best bet would be to email the professor and hope that he/she is in an understanding mood.
I never forgave illness without a doctor’s note. I required evidence of some sort to verify the claim. Faculty get all sorts of excuses that are silly, routine and bogus.
One of the things I loved about Wesleyan was the honor code. Students and faculty took it seriously. Junior year I got sick during the exam week and felt that I couldn’t do my best work on my last exam, a take home. So I called the professor, said I was sick and asked for an extension. He granted it and told me to feel better. I valued being at a school that assumed I would act with honesty and integrity and that treated me like a trustworthy adult.
My condolences, @zannah, at being stuck teaching at a school that was so much less than that.
Have you contacted the professor? I would do that as fast as posisble. If you have issues, then contact the Dean of Student.s
Go to the health center or a nearby wellness center and get a medical note from there. They’ll most likely understand if you miss class out of the blue if you never missed a class, yet.
They missed an exam – that’s way more significant than missing a class.
I would have just E-mailed your instructor or professor if you knew you were going to miss class since you were sick. He/She should be understanding if you explain the situation. I had a similar situation my Freshman year of college during finals week (had the Flu) but couldn’t make it up as the grades were due the next week.
