Getting internet at your apartment

With AT&T, you get a $10/mo discount if you get a phone line. The cheapest phone line, the measured rate, is ~$8/mo + taxes/fees = ~$12/mo. I got one because it’s nice to have backup when your cell phone doesn’t work, and it’s cheap.

In any case, if you’re experiencing excessive downtime with any internet, make sure your equipment is not at fault! Internet going down due to your laptop losing wireless connectivity = your equipment. The same applies if the router overheats. It’s only the provider’s fault if all your equipment is fully operational, but the uplink is having issues.

^ i thought it was true that comcast has random down times though.

Comcast doesn’t tend to randomly “go down” per-se, but it has jams, some of which are so bad that it might as well be down-time, and this happens on a very frequent basis. It’s especially true in college towns like Berkeley because there tends to be lots of students pounding the internet at the same time.

It’s like those cases where you’re in a traffic jam on a bridge, and you can’t seem to tell whether it’s just a really bad traffic jam or a “bridge-out”.
