Getting internships whilst in CGS

Hi everyone,

Im going to start my college life at BU next semester at the College of General Studies (CGS), which is basically the college for those who barly made it into the university. I was just wondering, is getting a prestigious buisness type internship (google, goldmansach, JP morgan…) nearly impossible, even with a high GPA, if I am attending CGS?

Thank in advance

Getting such an internship is unlikely even if you entered QSB directly, certainly not after freshman or sophomore year.

You won’t be getting those internships while you’re in CGS since you’ll be a freshman/sophomore. By the time you’re a junior/senior and are applying for internships, you’ll have transferred to your other school (CAS, SMG, COM, etc.) and that is all they’ll see. And when you graduate, your resume will simply say Boston University BS or BA in whatever… they’ll never know you were in CGS unless you tell them.

So that is to say: it won’t matter. And FWIW, my friends who started in CGS got jobs that were just as good and are doing just as well as everyone else. I also found, with the exception of just one of my friends who is a bit special (I love her but she’s flighty!), my CGS friends had a more rigorous work ethic & they ended up really excelling in their COM classes/getting good jobs. CGS is a good program.

My son got into the CGS program too. Everyone is like well he won’t start out in business - he won’t have all the opportunities - its not a good thing - he will struggle since he was “barely” accepted. We are going Friday to the open house, but can anyone give me anymore information on this program. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think its awful that he got in. I mean there were something like 55,000 applicants - is he the bottom of the barrel? Its not the ideal situation, but I don’t see it as awful. You need to fulfill some gen ed classes no matter where you go. I get that its a “special” program, but I don’t know that it should be an absolute no. He definitely has other choices in which he got directly into the business school, but I’d say BU is in the top three. Any guidance from anyone who knows more about this program would be appreciated. Thank you!

Thank for the info u guys  @momtoo3 at CGS you basically do all your liberal art requirments, so that in your junior and senior year, you solemly doing classes specific to your major. By the end of your senior year, your kid would of done the exact same classes as his peers, only at different times as the rest. Out of curiosity, which other unis did he get into?

@Jimmypage43 thank you for the response. That’s what I thought and I don’t see it as a total negative, if he has an interest in going. His top three are BU, Fordham and Bentley. He was also accepted to Northeastern, UCONN, UDEL, Bryant and some others he has no longer any interest in. I think with any of his top three he can have great success! Third kid, more relaxed

Agree with Proud Terrier. In fact, DD said that CGS students are often stronger in the COM program because there are heavier writing requirements in CGS than larger lecture style gen ed classes. I invite you to click on my name and look at my posts… I am very pro-cgs, and have talked about this program in many previous posts. i keep responding because there is so much misinformation and not a lot of people commenting that actually went through it.
