Admission to CGS

how much easier is it !!
you can transfer out right?

Wow, you arent even in and you're talking about transfering out? Please dont go, you might take away my spot.

it would imagine it's difficult to transfer out of CGS just because I don't think many of their courses will fit into the course sequence for other schools - having no experience or friends that have done it, I can't say anything for sure.

Well CGS is a 2 year program where after those 2 years you then pick the school you want to focus on your major. I doubt you can transfer out, since it's a programtype school

can you still minor in something while in CGS?

You dont major in anything at CGS...

CGS is a program of its own. Go to the website and all will be revealed.

You spend two years in CGS, and then at the end of your sophomore year, you can transfer into whichever school you want - given you have the GPA that school requires. It's core curriculum without the fighting for spots, and the teaching assistants. Get over the stigma, some of the most intelligent people I have met in my life are in CGS. And, it's very work intensive. We do more work than some CAS kids. CGS is no cake-walk.

Oh, and second semester freshman year, you can take electives. In fact, it's encouraged. Plus, depending on the college you want to go to, they have required courses you must take.

To transfer to SMG, what would be the required GPA?

I dont care about the stigma, I think it is a good opportunity.
What are some benefits of CGS? Are the class sizes smaller?
What kind of stats do you need for admission to CGS regular decision?

If you call CGS directly, they are very helpful and can transfer you to an advisor...I'm not really sure about the GPA for SMG, because I want to transfer to COM...I THINK it might be a 2.7...not so sure though, don't hold me to it. Also, I don't know the stats, because I had originally applied to COM, and got referred to CGS because my SAT scores were not as high as other COM students, but I had a pretty good high school transcript, letters and supplements.
CGS is a GREAT program! There are about 700 freshman in CGS - we're the second largest school in BU, behind CAS. There are 8 teams, with about 80-90 kids on the team. There is one team lecture a week in Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science. These classes break down into small discussion groups of about 25 kids for Humanities and Social Science. Natural Science breaks into lab groups. There are two JSA lectures a week for both sciences, which is about 300 kids. Rhetoric classes are the smallest, with 30 kids in a larger discussion, and 13-14 in a small discussion. You can drop the large discussion second semester. It all sounds very confusing, but professors really do care whether or not you understand the information. There are never any T.A.'s, and at first I was like, is this a school for idiots? But then, after open house I realized that we all graduate from BU with the same degree as anyone else here. Also, people say that CGS kids are better prepared for work junior year, when we integrate with everyone else, because we have such a wide curriculum, as well as an intense workload.
And if you want CGS, pick to live on West Campus...Warren sucks.

Chocolate - to transfer within the university to SMG you must do the following:

Have a minimum GPA of 2.7 (THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS)

Complete the intensive business class SM299 Business as a System with a grade of B or higher (NO EXCEPTIONS)

You must write a memo to the dean

You must provide a copy of your university file

Hope that helps

Just to point out that BU, while a really big place, is not a bunch of big lecture classes. COM has 101 with all the COM freshman but you'll find that even "big" lecture classes are often not particularly large.

Sounds great..! Thanks so much.
Do you find that you have more CGS friends than others?

Yes, only because you are around so many of those people. Most of the CGS kids live in West Campus, and you go to school with them as well. There will be other people who live on your floor who are in other schools. Also, it's easy the first week to introduce yourself to anyone, and they will (most of the time) be friendly. A lot of the CFA kids stick with each other, although I have one friend from CFA. Mostly CGS, but it's not as huge of a deal as you would think.

Nalgene1080:
Those are not the requirements to continue to SMG from CGS.
Those are the requirements for students in schools Other than CGS to transfer within the university.

The requirements to transfer from CGS to SMG after the 2 year program are:
-2.3 cumulative GPA
-SM299 and AC221 with C or better (C- not accepted)

thats it.

GOBU - I said "Chocolate - to transfer within the university to SMG you must do the following" I didn't say anything about specifically CGS.

Tho don't you find it interesting that the standards are so much lower - They're also graded on differently within the classes on order of the Dean... that's why they keep CGS only sections.

I'd have to agree with you on having CGS only sections, especially in SM299, graded differently that those taking SM299 from other schools. They def are.

I find it interesting that you keep finding things wrong with CGS, as if to say we are actually less intelligent than the rest of BU - or am I misinterpreting you?

I am not trying to mis-represent the CGS program, I am speaking from personal experience.

There are CGS only sections in elective courses at other schools (i.e. SM299, COM201) and the way they are graded differently is this: For SM299, there are some sections with only CGS students, some with intra-univ. transfers, and some with only grad. students. SM299 is graded on a "psuedo" bell-curve, meaning that it is shaped by the average grade in the class. For CGS transfer students, where SMM299 is likely the first class taken in the School of Management, they are simply at a disadvantage to those other students (intra univ transfers and grad students) who might have already taken other courses at SMG whose curriculum is similar. Thusly, the grading curve in each class section is adjusted by the professor at the end of the semester to create an equilibrium. For CGS students, who again, this would be their first class at the School of Management, history shows that they score slightly lower than other sections. This is NOT because CGS students are less "intelligent" than other students. Like I've said, this is the first class in which CGS students are exposed to this type of material, increasing its difficulty.

The CGS program is a integral part of Boston University, and I fully respect its continued development.
