I’m planning to major in something to do with computer science and maybe a double major with business admin. To get into a good college, would it be more beneficial to found a nonprofit organization, or would it be better to create a company(for profit).
the nonprofit would be to benefit various charities where i establish the framework for donations
the other could be more useful to me in the future if i expand the business later.
please give feedback!
To do this legitimately is going to require a LOT of time and effort. Colleges will see right through it if you just create a “charity” or “company” and then don’t do anything with it. Should you decide to follow through with your plan, go for the charity. It won’t look quite as bad if you don’t manage to do well with it, rather than failing in a profit-making venture.
@Lindagaf thank you! I have already developed the framework, so i hope it doesn’t take as much effort as starting from scratch. Thanks!
Do whatever it is that you’re most passionate about. In my opinion, the value of nonprofits have been cheapened in top-25 admissions because it’s easy to make one. All you need is to file in your state, transfer money into NP, and voila! You’ve got a successful NP. The higher your income bracket, the more suspicious they seem to be of such things.
A for-profit business (assuming you make profit) involves a little more real-world skill and shows that you had something so valuable to the industry that adults bought from you, a high schooler.
Whatever you choose to do, good luck- and remember, if you mess up on these, you don’t have to put them down on your application.
