Getting into Harvard

Lets say u go to a pretty decent school and ur grades are pretty high but not that high....like mid high 90s...whatll harvard want to see to separate u from others? im just asking out of curiosity...plz dont tell me to do something i love cause i really do things i love except the thing is that i cant win competitions in them or anything ... and ive a lot of volunteer and plan on doing much more...what would u recommend? (disregard grades as of now...im working on them lol )

Perhaps recommendations from your sponsors at the volunteering organization that you are affiliated with. Maybe some amazing essays that you should start working on now, they really make the difference. I would strongly suggest writing to your own prompt too as it shows creativity beyond the normal scope in both your essay and the prompt you came up with. Otherwise, I would say perfect every single little detail in your application and create a solid application, you seem to grasp the other parts quite well.

essay, essay, essay. Write a great essay (about anything, really) and make it compelling and easy to read. Make the reader laugh a little, that'll make you stand out more than 100 trophies.

thanks =) i appreciate the advice when i feel i have enough info ill post my stats as well thanks again

Teacher recommendations can have a profound effect on the outcome of your application.

Is there any way you can go above and beyond in one of your volunteer activities? One of the parents had a child who was a volunteer at a hospital. Her duties were nothing that exciting, but she looked around and saw a problem. Made a suggestion. Acted on the suggestion. And had a great essay topic and probably a great recommendation, because she was proactive. Colleges are looking for leadership. But leadership isn't about being president of xyz club, it's about problem solving. It's about changing the world, even if it's just a tiny change.

Currently, im tutor and teach one specific grade each year. I do Indian classical dance and perform at a few places, i play the violin but non-western or indian style, do indian classical singing or carnatic music, and i volunteer at my temple. Well i guess i have strong ties to the indian ways and ive known so many ppl in the indian community since i was little and have grew up around them ( this is where i volunteer as well). I feel that this is what allows me to be who i am, but is this in a sense inferior to all those who are debate captians or have won numerous competitions?

yea im really connected with my chinese heritage.. i do chinese painting and volunteer at chinese school and i also do kungfu...

it doesnt seem comparable to intl sci fair winners.... but i really love doing what i do =)

Find something that you are passionate at - work at it and do something with it. Don't just settle for club president; co-found another chapter in a different school. Don't just do community service in your city; start a community service trip. Look for these initiatives, go beyond the ordinary.

As for essays, I think the best time to write them would be during junior summer and senior first quarter. Gaining perspective and depth on a issue takes time and introspection -- don't rush the essay writing process. Take a few weeks off (at least) to ponder on your essay topics.

If you can amalgamate passion, essays, interview and recommendations and create a unique 'blend' of yourself, Harvard is yours.

haha wow thanks debate_addict thats so awesome =) ill keep trying
