Hello all. I'm considering a career as an orthodontist or a muscle/bone doctor. However, I'm not set on one thing (as i hope is normal for a freshman in college), so i want to keep my options open. I know that i wouldn't want to do anything science related besides doctor/ortho, so my problem is i dont want to major in bio or pre-med and wind up either not getting into med/dental school, not being able to afford it, or choosing not to do it and then be stuck with a bio degree. I'm also interested in Accounting, and parlaying that into a management type career in a business of some sort, or private accounting.

So basically what im asking is, is it possible to get into med school with something like an accounting degree as long as i take the required pre reqs for admission? how about dental school? will i be at a huge disadvantage if i do get in? thanks everyone, i just want to keep my options open.

I am an MD so I do not really know anything about dental dchool but as far as medical school is concerned you can major in anything you want (I majored in Astronomy) as long as you take the undergraduate prerequisite courses in Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics (generally does not need to be Calculus based) and English. Some medical schools require that you take a college level math course and a few require a semester of calculus which is very unlikely to have anything to do with what you study in medical school. As an Astronomy major I took many courses in Calculus and Calculus based Physics as an undergraduate so some medical schools requiring that you take a math course as an undergraduate was not an issue for me. Personally, the hardest prerequisite by far was Organic Chemistry which I barely got a C in. In my case I had already been accepted by Drexel University School of Medicine when I was taking Organic Chemistry and they said they would not rescind my acceptance as long as I finished the course with a C or better. Normally, a C in Organic Chemistry would be a fatal blow for your chances of acceptance at a medical school.

Thanks for your personal experience input. I looked into it at my school, and the prerequisites required I feel would be far too much on top of the already notoriously intensive Accounting program. Also, some of the prerequisites have prerequisites themselves, so I would be looking at close to a double major. I feel like I would one, be sacrificing my gpa highly as well as needing a whole additional year of undergrad to complete both realistically. I don’t have my heart set on dentist/med school so that combined with the chance that I don’t get in and wind up stuck with a biology or chemistry degree doesn’t make a good formula for doing the prereq’s. I just wanted to keep my options open in case I change my mind, but it seems like I need to commit to it from the start if I wanted to

The prerequisites to get into a dental program will depend on which school you choose. When I was looking into dentistry, I found this site ([Dental Degree Programs: Become a Dentist or Dental Assistant](http://dentaldegree.org/)) and it really helped me compare my options. I ended up majoring in business and minoring in biology and got into a great program. If you’re still not sure about dentistry, you should also find out if it is the right fit for you. This website ([Dentists](http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos072.htm)) has a lot of information about the field, including the average salary, job outlook, and more.
I hope these sites help you make your decision. Good Luck!

We have had extensive experience at [Illinois Institute of Technology](http://www.iit.edu) with students wishing to enter Dental School and needing to make up some deficiencies or improve their chances. These students have been able to strengthen their application for Dental School by taking a Professional Masters degree in Biology such as the one described in the link below.
