Getting into UCSB out of state!

So, I lived in California all my life with hopes of getting accepted to UCSB for college. Before starting my junior year, my parents informed me that the whole family was moving to Florida for a job that my Dad wanted. I was devastated to be whisked away from what I thought was my perfect life. I knew right then that my chances of getting into UC Santa Barbara were being taken away as soon as I moved out of California.
Here are my accomplishments, do I have ANY chance whatsoever of being accepted to my dream school?

-GPA junior year = 4.0 (unweighted, all honors classes)
-GPA sophomore year = 3.7 (unweighted)
-GPA freshman year = 3.9 (unweighted)
-3 years of Varsity Lacrosse (received the "coaches award" during sophomore year). Started every year.
-1 year of Freshman basketball (received "most improved" award)
-National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Quill & Scroll Honor Society, Honor Roll
-Editor in chief of high school newspaper
-will attend the UCSD Academics Connection summer program for three weeks-- taking a Journalism class worth college credits
-nominated and will attend the summer journalism visitation program at the University of Florida
-nominated for the national youth leadership forum by many teachers
-received the National Scholars for High School students award
-participated in the National Charity League sophomore year and was secretary (would have continued on if I did not move)
-100+ hours of community service
-Environmental Club= sophomore year
-Breast Cancer Club= freshman year
-started and founded an Operation Smile Club sophomore year. Raised over $1,000 for the organization. I attended the National Leadership Conference in Utah last summer for one week for the organization and represented my club. (would have continued the club if I had not moved)
-SAT scores: (first time) 1150 --> goal is 1200s. ACT scores are coming.
-had a part-time job freshman and sophomore year in California at a fitness center (worked 8-12 hours/week, and almost every other day in the summer)
-My oldest brother attends UCSB and will graduate with two majors (in 4 years) in summer 2007.
-Senior year schedule: AP English 4, AP Gov't/Econ, AP Calc 1, AP Stat, Honors Physics, and Newspaper (will be editor in chief again this year). Will also play my fourth year of Varisty Lacrosse (team is ranked #5 in Florida as of now).

-Also wrote movie reviews for a local newspaper in California
-Still continue raising money for Operation Smile organization and plan to go on a volunteer mission trip if time permits after senior year.

-I am also applying for an internship at the Orlando Sentinel newspaper this summer. Only 12 students in my county get chosen. So, I hope to be part of this. Would be something I love plus, looks great for college!

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE PREDICT MY CHANCES? I'D LOVE TO KNOW IF I HAVE A CHANCE AT UCSB OR ANY UC SCHOOL!

The grades are high enough for UCSB, a 4.0 unweighted sounds fine. I'd work on the SATs. The average is around a 1200, and most of those people recorded for that are in-state applicants.

I live close to Santa Barbara. I'm fairly certain the essay and your courseload are extremely important. How many years do you have of a language?

Legacy, or your older brother going, won't count. It's a public school. Since you're out of state, class rank will probably be important as well.

So go for the essay, keep up the classes, and really try to see if you can boost the SAT score.

I'm a junior now. I am on my fourth year of Spanish. I've already worked on my essay for colleges this year, I am most likely going to talk about moving across the country and how I have changed and what I have learned.. or I am going to talk about my work with starting a club and my involvement with Operation Smile.. or my journalism experiences.

Since I moved to my new high school a little less than a week before the actual school year started, I was unable to take any AP classes because it was too late. I'm taking right now: Hon Chemistry, Spanish 7/8, US History, Hon Precalc, Hon English III, and Newspaper.

I've been working with my SAT tutor a lot to improve my scores. I'm taking the ACTs early tomorrow morning, and I'm hoping to do well.

Thanks for your help np99sky!

Quick question on the SATs. Are those 1150 grades for all three tests, or just for CR+M, because the UCs count and score applicants based on all three tests (CR+M+W)--so we need those scores. We also need the scores on the two SAT IIs you will be taking (give us estimates if you haven't taken them yet).

Thanks,

The 1150 is out of 1600. I got a 600 on Writing. I havent taken the SAT IIs but I plan on taking Chemistry, Reading, and Math (the hardest one) and plan to get in the 600s.

Any other help would be greatly appreciated :)

I am also considering these schools:

San Diego State
UCSC
UCSB
UCSD
University of Florida
University of Oregon
University of Washington (Seattle)

can someone please chance me at these schools.. id really appreciate it. i have no idea where i can get in and where i cant. thanks.

Assuming you bump up that SAT score

San Diego State- safety
UCSC- match
UCSB- slight reach
UCSD- reach
University of Florida- match (in state)
University of Oregon- match
University of Washington (Seattle)- match/slight reach

I don't think the UC's are worth the OOS tuition unless:
-You can afford it
-You're going to UCSD, UCLA, or UCB

Out of state tuition at the UC’s is 25+ K. Add another 10-13 k for housing.

thanks, even tho the tuition is expensive, id still die to go to UCSB!!

any tips for helping my chanes going to UCSB?

I think ull get into UCSB.

Just retake the SAT.

If you can afford UCSB's OOS tuition, then by all means apply there. If I had the grades, UCSB would have been my top choice. As it is, I'm going to U. of Oregon next year.

It's tough to get into as an OOS applicant. One of my friends moved out of California his junior year of high school. He apply to UCSB and was rejected with a 3.8 UW GPA and a 1280 on his SAT. Lindsey has great EC's though.

Thanks so much for the replies! One of my friends here in Florida had a 3.3 UW in IB with a 1320 out of 1600 SAT.. and was rejected. I don't think she had that many ECs but she was on my lacrosse team. So knowing she was rejected, got me really nervous about my chances.

Any ways to increase my chances?

Am also working partime at small start up company as office manager.

Well, the obvious way to increase your chances is to increase your SAT I and SAT II scores.

Another possibility is to take a gap year and move to California and take a job for a year (don't go to college, though--because if you immediately go to college, and your parents provide cover most of your costs, you will still be considered a Florida resident). If you move there, and work there for a year, then you will be considered a California resident--and you will be judged accordingly for admission based upon this.

Also, note that if you move, I believe you can apply as a California resident in November even though you won't be there a year until the following May. You have to indicate in your application that you are taking a year off from school, though. (Also, I wonder if this is really a possibility for you--but you asked for all possible options--so I'm giving you one).

Best of success.

I wish I could take a gap year, but I don't think my parents will let me. Trust me, I've tried everything to get back there and even conisdered living with my friends senior year but it's not an option. I'm just going to need to be an OOS applicant, and deal with it :(

I got a 25 on my ACTs, just got the scores the other day. I know this score does not include the writing part, and I was very conifdent with my essay so that will bring it up. But honestly, my test-taking skills are average and I try so hard but I just can't get the scores I want on ACTs/SATs.

Am taking the SATs next weekend. Will re-take ACTs shortly after.
