I am currently doing a research project for a professor. Before I started in his group he asked if I wanted to do a computer project or hands on project (materials science lab). I was interested in programming and comp modeling at the time so we agreed I would help a grad student with this computer modeling project. During the middle of last semester we agreed I would receive 1 credit for the fall and do 2 credits of research in the spring (this semester). I have realized this decision was made out of immaturity because I know now that I truly dislike working on computers. I have no passion for the project itself (which I believe is important to produce good research) but enjoy the science behind the model (surface properties of polymers). This is not what I want to do and I need some advice.

Has anyone here started a project and realized that they really didn't like what they are doing? What did you do? I have not signed up for the 2 credit research course yet and I am not sure if I would even like to continue the project. Should I tell my professor I want out or stick it out for the semester and finish the project?

Talk to professor. He might be able to find something else for you to do, or recommend another professor you can work with. I’ve been through this, and its not really a big deal.

Talk to the guy, I’m sure at some point in his research career he realized a project wasn’t as fruitful as he hoped and had to abandon it for greener pastures.

Deciliter politely talk to the prof. Be prepared to finish this semester in the project as you previously agreed, as it may come down to that before he can find you something new, but you won’t burn that bridge, which is very important fo letter of reference purposes if you ever need them.

We all agree. I will only add a little that might help you in approaching the prof.

Go to his office hours and tell him that you have really valued the experience, but part of what you have learned is that the programming aspect is not your interest, but hands-on stuff is (or whatever currently is). Ask HIS advice as to whether it would be best to go forward with the next 2-credit part or make a change.

Sometimes it’s best to stick something out even if you don’t like it (for various reasons: letters of rec; the project will suffer without you; you show you are responsible etc). Sometimes it’s not necessary.

You and the prof can work this out by talking it through, and he will not hold your change of heart against you if you approach it this way.

Don’t go into “I was immature” when I made this decision. (You probably weren’t, lol). Just that you have learned more about your own interests through the process.
