I am current going into my junior year and I am just finishing a summer class. I want to get a letter of recommendation from the teacher, but I am applying for med school next year and I think the AMCAS doesn't keep accounts/letters for more than a year. How should I go about getting the recommendation? Do I just ask for one and have her keep hold of it until I need it, or what?

2 basic choices:

1) ask the prof to write you a letter and then hold it until next year. The next year when you open an AMCAS letter file, ask the prof to submit it. Sure you won’t be the first student to ask this.

2) wait until next year to ask the letterwriter. If you’ve done well in the class, the prof will usually remember you, esp if you include info like when you were in the class and your grade. Also include your CV so the prof can include additional details in the LOR.

You can also check out Interfolio–which is a letter submission service that many students use when applying to grad school. Don’t know exactly how Interfolio works, but it’s easy to find online.

You can ask them if they would write one for you in the future, and then when time comes closer to AMCAS due date (or rather, start date), you can get them to write it then. Give them 2 months notice just to be safe, because professors can be real slow and make you wait forever.
