Getting started with research

I was wondering if people could please share how they obtained a research position. I'm going to be a second year, and have not taken any bio lab courses. I am willing to put in the time to learn though and I was hoping to apply for some research abroad opportunities next summer, but most prefer (read: required) students with prior lab experience. I'm interested in biology type materials. I've tried searching the forums and run into a lot of erroneous topics. I'm guessing the general consensus is going to a particular professor's website, looking up his research, and then emailing him. Does anyone know any undergraduate programs to apply for that target the unexperienced younger types that are looking to get their foot in the door? Thanks!

Thanks. I was slowly making my way down to that on the list (list here for whoever else was interested: Undergraduate Research @ Berkeley )
