Getting your first internship

I am just finishing my first semester of IE here at Iowa State and I am very confused about getting my first internship. I am assuming it is too soon?

I have already bought a book about getting your first Engineering internship. I have been attending workshops at our Engineering Career Services but I don't know when exactly I should start applying and making contacts.

I have a B.S in Economics, my last work experience was working as an IT contractor for a Fortune 500 company, I was there for exactly 3 years before I started here.

Does my professional non-Engineering experience help me in anyway? Any feedback or advice would be appreciated.

<~IE too. I secured my first internship in my 2nd semester. I had a previous Bachelors and Military experience.

All I did was go to our career fair and talk to a lot of corporations, they seemed to like me and I interviewed with about 7-8 of them. Also I found a lot of leads on indeed.com and applied for a couple of internships and had interviews with them too.

Just show how your previous experience is somewhat related and it will help. The good thing is IE covers everything, so econ and IT are both utilized to some extent in most of the broad field of IE.

Take advantage of your campus career center. They should be able to guide you.
