Gifts/Thank yous for Letter of Recommendation

Two of my professors wrote me letters of recommendation a couple weeks, the week before Spring which just ended. I was planning on giving them thank you cards, as is expected and I hope appreciated. Also, with the thank you cards I bought $25 master card gift cards to give them as a token of thanks. Yet, now, I am having second thoughts and wondering if that is appropriate or if it is too much to give them or too little. Basically, what is appropriate? A sole thank you card, or a little gift attached?

Thanks for the help.

You can give them a thank you note with a gift card followed up with a card letting them know where you got accepted, that’s fine. It is part of their job and many professors are delighted to just hear where you got in.

As far as gift giving is concerned, you can give anything from a $25 gift card like you did, to anything like 24k gold, a new car, a vacation beach house, infrared cameras, or a 3 day all expenses paid vacation with backstage Justin Bieber passes.

The important thing to note is, any gift giving that takes place should only happen AFTER the letters have been received by the program(s)! You wouldn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea…
