girl majoring in science/math v. spanish

Get this: My mom and my grandma have ganged up on me and are insisting constantly that my only chance of getting in to top schools is by being a girl who wants to study science or math. But I want to study Spanish or languages or something like that.

I think that 1) that would be basically like lying and very cheap 2) it wouldn't work because there are lots of girls who want to study science and math.

What do you guys think? They keep saying if adcoms narrow it down to like 10, they'll pick the one that wants to study science/math because there is government funding for that.

it's more true for private schools that they are more likely to admit a female intending to major in science/engineering. The male-female ratio in my major(mechanical E) at my school for my class is 10-1. I'm sure the school would want to shift that up.

Choose Spanish/languages.

Would you be able to write a better essay on a subject you're genuinely interested in, or a subject your family pressured you to pick?

As long as you show passion for your intended area of study, I doubt you will be hurt in the admissions process.

And yes, there are a lot of girls who want to study science and math. It's not 1970 anymore.

Thanks lol, that is what I was hoping someone would say.

=) Good luck!
