Well, Shay33, a deferral is NOT a rejection!!!

What you need to do is to send a letter reiterating how Barnard IS your first choice school and that you will definitely attend if admitted (it that is the case). And, IMO, if you are sure your GPA is what held you back, then DO talk about it. “Having no excuses” is something that only mature individuals recognize. Most will try and try to MAKE excuses. Let them know that you recognize that your poor choices which lead to your lower GPA have resulted in a deeper understanding of the consequences of such behavior. You are probably less likely to fall into that trap than someone who has gone on all their school career making perfect grades, and then suddenly finds themselves in new surroundings (college) and they think they can still “cruise”.

Also, think hard about any additional things you might have accomplished since you submitted your application. But DO let them hear from you!

trapeze, it was the opposite with me! My parents both studied computers in college and were SURE I had gotten in, so I had to lower THIER hopes! Haha!

And shay: already called them and they won’t pick up their phones. I’ve never tapped my foot in my life like I am right now! As for guidance, I’d suggest going to some safeties who have rolling. It made my life 100% less stressful to have a state school under my belt. Also, I found a website where you can type in your SAT score and they suggest some colleges for you.

Did anyone who submitted her id number and was able to confirm enrollment, etc. get a letter today? Or has anyone been able to confirm her admission?

Thanks smartundecided. : ) I’ve already been accepted into a state school, but I really don’t want to go. I was asking about how to go from this deferral, but definitely looking at more safeties.

churchmusicmom- Thank you so much for the encouragement, and thanks for also hanging out around these boards for so long! I don’t know what each wave of applicants every year would do without you, and calmom, and all the other helpful people connected to Barnard around here. I’ll definitely take your advice.

I don’t know why my letter hasn’t come today, even though I get into the admitted students site, with my name on it, and can enroll, and I called Barnard admissions and they said I was in. My mailman often gives my mail to the wrong house, so I’m guessing that is a definite possibility lol

Oh, that’s such a relief to hear because I haven’t got my mail either but I can get into the admitted students site, and it has my name, but when I called the admissions office a few minutes ago I only got the automated answer thing.

oh yea I called yesterday so I talked to someone. But i just read an old thread, and one person said that theirs didnt come with regular mail but two hours later, so it may come later. And they didn’t get it until three days after they sent it and they lived in NY. So dont worry!

@ boricura, thank you for the reassurances. Mail in my town in a little erratic because it’s small so the mail gets routed through the closest city, and we’ve had a lot of different mail people in the past couple months, so things are often late or delivered to the wrong house or whatnot. But I’m still a tad bit anxious. I’d just like to see it in writing before I tell anyone, so not getting it today was a little nerve wracking.

For everyone still waiting:
My code worked in the admitted students website and allowed me to enroll.
The priority mail came with my normal mail and it was the size of an unfolded letter. It’s a red, white, and blue (how patriotic!) cardboard envelope.
Inside the envelope there was a black folder containing an acceptance letter, a “welcome to barnard” booklet, and a mini subway map that explained the BC/CU relationship.
Good luck! And can’t wait to see you all in april/next fall!

Shay, I really hope you get in RD but even if that doesn’t work out, I’m sure you’ll end up somewhere great.

thanks Jaden for posting the contents of the envelope! I live in TX, and mine hasn’t come yet; but the website worked. I don’t think I can really believe it until I have my envelope in front of me.

congrats everyone who has received their letters so far! I can’t wait to meet you all!

my condolences to those who were deferred or denied. I can only imagine what you are going through, and I am really sorry.

I’m a firm believer in the fact that everything happens for a reason. By deciding to apply ED to Barnard, I think all of us, regardless of our admission status, have proven that we are strong women who are proud of our identities, and want to make a real difference in the world. And maybe this didn’t work out for some of us, but that doesn’t mean any of our dreams are finished. Sure, we may need to do some minor adjustments, but in the end I think we are all more than capable of making our dreams come true!

(and I now feel like a cheesy Disney movie ending)

To Shay33 – if there are issues with your GPA and you were deferred, then I think it is almost certain that the ad com wants to see your midyear grade report before making a decision. They like you, but they need you to prove that you have matured and are now focused on doing well. If it’s a rising trend situation, then they want to see that the trend holds. I know it is late in the semester so your fall grades are probably pretty much set – but do study hard for your finals and do your best – that is probably the most important thing you can do to win admission in the spring.

I got in (((: and am/was extremely excited to meet all of you! However, when I talked to the financial aid counselor before applying, it seemed as if the financial aid packages were supposedly reasonable. However, I can’t even begin to express how disappointed I am in my financial aid package ): Less then $10,000 for a school that costs over $55000. Is there anyway there could be a mistake? My combined family income is approx. $170,000 so maybe I’m going out on a limb here…My dad’s friend (who makes approx. the same amount as my dad) applied to Princeton and was accepted and ended up paying only $17,000 a year. I wasn’t quite expecting that but I thought $30,000 would be more reasonable…any help/advice? I need it. I can’t start celebrating until I know I can afford it.

Hi guys! I just want to let you know that I plugged my code in yesterday and couldn’t get in, but today I plugged it in and it worked. You should all try your codes again if it didn’t work for you yesterday! But keep in mind, you are all wonderful, strong, beautiful women and you don’t need an admissions letter to confirm that.

Heartbroken5 - I believe that the way it works is that if you don’t go to college anywhere else next year - then you can apply ED for the class of 2016. However, if you attend another college or university next year - you can apply as a transfer. Good luck and I hope you find your way to Barnard, or find yourself at a school that you love even more!
