Girls applying for engineering

But I think most parents have a point nowadays when they say that this is the first generation where it's cool to be rude, cool to act stupidly, and uncool to be polite and considerate.

Absolutely.

"the best way for you girls to keep guys from making such remarks"

It's not any girl's job to control what guys say. People who want to be obnoxious will say obnoxious things no matter what. The girl's job is to go about her business and live her life without worrying about what other people say.

Probably 60% of the applicants to Harvard are fabulously qualified, but Harvard can only accept 10%.

Sadly this narrowminded sexism crops up in classes as well - every time "meathead" doesn't get an A or doesn't get an internship he blames it on discrimination. That getting really old, folks.

"The girl's job is to go about her business and live her life without worrying about what other people say. "

That happens to be the job for people in general.....and at some point everyone messes up.
That's true about the 'meatheads' though.

Meathead, lol

"It's not any girl's job to control what guys say".

I concur. This "blame the victim" mentality is prevalent, but no less correct for that.

Does a girl applying for a hard sceince like chemistry have the same advantage as for engineering?

[/quote]

there's no advantage for that or for engineering. This was a good answer:

This has been discussed extensively already. Since you do not apply directly to the engineering school at Harvard, there is little "boost" or gain from listing "engineering" as one of your potential concentrations. The admissions officers know too well that many students will change their minds about majors once they get to college and they also know how some try to game the system. Tell your "friend" that if you get into Harvard, it will be because the adcom thought Harvard would be a good match, regardless of your sex.

EDIT: You might also want to reconsider why you're friends with this guy...

^Damn - I meant more correct. Mea culpa.
