Hah. So I'm currently a sophomore majoring in computer science. I've gotten pretty much used to girls everywhere (from Starbucks to hotel clerks, to airports) getting all WIDE-EYED and going "WOAH! REALLY?!" when I tell them my major.

For example, a typical Starbucks conversation with a random girl would be like:

Me: hi!
Her: hi!
Me: blah blah blah blah
Her: blah blah blah blah
Me: blah blah....blah? blah blah!!
Her: Oh cool. So what are you majoring in?
Me: Computer Science
Her: [wide eyed now] Oh my God! Reaaaaaaly? That's crazy! Is it hard?
Me: blah blah....blah blah blah
Her: Oh wow. That sounds like a really hard major? So what do you plan to do later? You're just in it for the money aren't you ;)

Anyway, you get my drift. Well, I just decided to shoot for law school so I wanted to switch over to Political Science and have an easier time getting an "A". But honestly what do people think of poli-sci majors? Not that what a girl thinks of me makes any difference on where I want to go in life, but the fact is that I'm already a comp sci major...and sometimes it doesn't hurt to know the truth about what people think of you. Just out of curiosity...what do girls think of poli-sci majors compared to an engineering guy?

Well first we need to know some relevant information:

1) How tall are you
2) How academically intelligent are you

Even though CS majors all well known to be swimming in ladies, I don’t think they’ll really care either way what your major is.

Oh and if you enjoy CS more than poli-sci, you should stick with it. GPA isn’t as important to law schools as you think and they understand that some majors are harder than others.

Actually, one’s gpa is very significant when applying to Law School. Adcoms at law schools are kind of known for showing no sympathy, no matter what you major in.

First of all, Law School is a numbers game, they care about GPA and LSAT, then letters of recc and personal essay, rigor of undergrad major and undergrad college are small factors at the bottom of the list. That said, please do yourself a favor and stick with the major you like, you will be happier in the long run, plus you can do Patent Law and other cool things Liberal Arts majors can’t :)

People think of Engineers as ugly nerds, it’s not exactly a turn on. But I like intelligent guys regardless of major, and smart, attractive people study all majors.

Your looks and personality don’t change with your major. You’re obviously smart and your looks play a huge role in how girls perceive you.

My Dad went to Dartmouth and did Comp Sci/Economics. He’s an ass. I would never go for a guy like him. haha

haha honestly, there is no “major that I like.” I’m not interested in computers at all, nor am I interested in programming, or video games, or robotics or anything my classmates talk about. I sit in class and people are talking about coding and World of Warcraft and this and that and I’m just sitting there going “uhhhhh…”

Anyhow, I have a 3.5 as of now but it’ll most likely go down a bit if I stick with computer science. The only reason I majored in it…yes, that Starbucks girl was right…was for the money.

At that time top banks and consulting firms hired the 4.0s from Harvard, Princeton, and Wharton…the only way for the 2nd tier Ivy grads to compete is if we major in something tough and nerdy. I enjoy working with people, taking on new missions, applying my knowledge to solve business cases, working with numbers and finance…so I actually hate computer science, but it’s for a career that I love.

EDIT: On the other hand, I also hate politics, history, the arts and humanities, calculus, stats, biology, chem, and physics. So I figured if I hate academics in general and have to suffer, I might as well suffer through a tough major and at least make it worthwhile.

Well I feel sorry for you then that you can’t find one subject you really enjoy and are treating college like a pre-professional finishing school. You think you will really enjoy law? Sounds like you’re just in it for the money, which won’t make you as happy as doing something you really enjoy, IMO. But I digress.

Sounds like you just need to find a “soft” major that sucks the least for you and worry more about other stuff like the LSAT, recs, and extracurriculars.

If you like numbers and finance, why not major in Finance/Business?! I feel bad for you if you’re majoring in something you hate…do you even like Law? haha i’ve met a lot of people going into BigLaw just for the money, but still…it’s 7 years of education, might as well find something you like :)

if you hate comp sci, that’s an excellent reason to drop it. but if you hate politics, why’re you studying that? at least you won’t be one of those annoying politics-obsessed pol sci majors though.

I remember a guy who went to cornell and got a sub 3 engineering gpa who was accepted to Harvard law. The pedigree of your institution matters also.

^ I’m guessing his LSAT was through the roof, Math/Physics majors score the highest on the LSAT on average, and Engineers generally excel in those subjects. 2/3 of the test is logic-based. Engineering majors are more desirable since most Law applicants studied liberal arts. Throw in stellar letters of recc and an amazing essay, and it makes sense. Even better if he’s a URM or disadvantaged in some way. But overall, LSAT is the #1 factor and GPA comes right after. Going to a school like Dartmouth and majoring in Comp Sci is an advantage for sure, but it boils down to LSAT/GPA.

The OP doesn’t seem to like Comp Sci anyway. Or anything, for that matter. oh well.

Your analysis is very flawed. There’s no evidence showing that girls are actually IMPRESSED by your major.

If you are talking to random girls working at the minimum wage who found it hard to even graduate high school (no offense) or those with a community college diploma then obviously ANY university major would impress them.

Just because they’re impressed by your CS major doesn’t mean they’ll be LESS impressed by other majors. You should test it by telling them “I study finance”, “I study economics”, “I study history” and etc.

Girls are very emotional and always exaggerate. For example, I told a random girl that I’m taking Math as an elective during the summer and she’s like “OMG that’s sooooooooooo hardd”, but does that mean I just got a ticket to a date with her? Maybe, but probably not.

Also, I secretly wish women who talk like that retain permanent damage to their vocal cords, rendering them unable to speak. Sorry, just me being a sadist. Carry on.
