Eh? Since when?

They reopened a beauty shop in Bancroft called "Waves"....cuts, perms, coloring and even waxing.....rumor has it even the men make appointments "after hours" to get their unibrows done! From what was written, an oasis for the gals who can let their hair down for a little pampering and deep conditioning! (if I can find the article I will post).... and ladies, forget the chap stick....keep the nude lip gloss with SPF 30! (much better!)

So when do they plan on installing the massage parlor?

usna_reject,
please clarify exactly what services are available at "Waves." From what I understand, this is not a full service salon--and even if it were, Plebes would have neither the time nor money to spend there.
Annapolis has some nice, but pricey salons (even by Southern California standards!).

When we went to A-Day and Plebe Parent Weekend at West Point, the vast majority of female cadets had their hair in a bun.

plebe summer hair was too short to style in a bun.

found it! dcmilitary.com
Zaphod, you might wanna be sitting down for this one! But have no fear- you too can call for an appointment! ;)

GOOD HAIR DAY

Waves is much more than a hair salon.

"It's a place where the women can relax and really treat themselves for a few minutes," said beautician Paula Clarke.

The new beauty shop, located in Bancroft Hall's 1st Wing, opened recently to provide hair care services to women midshipmen and, on a space available basis, local female servicemembers.

Liz MacDonald, the supervisor of the salon and Bancroft's barbershop, said a salon existed in 7th Wing for years, but in the mid-'90s it was merged with the barbershop.

Since she became supervisor last summer, MacDonald's goal has been to open a new beauty shop.

"I just felt it was important for the ladies to have their own place, especially since we had the space available right beside the barbershop," said MacDonald.

The services beauticians now offer at Waves such as relaxers, perms, cuts and styles, were specifically tailored to answer the needs of female midshipmen. Those needs were identified by a voluntary survey that was distributed to women in the brigade.

"From the survey, we learned many things about the ladies' hair care that will be useful in tailoring the services provided," said Cmdr. Walter Grauer, deputy director of the Non-appropriated Fund Division.

"We learned how often they get their hair cut, where they typically go to get it cut, what services they currently receive at the academy, and what ones they would like to see added."

Most services are the same as those provided at the barbershop, but knowing that it's a place just for them makes a difference to the women.

"I feel it was something the academy really needed. I know it has been a true morale booster for me as well as other female midshipmen," said Midn. 4/C Crystal Piraino.

"The atmosphere and environment really caters to the women here."

"When the beauty shop was a part of the barbershop, I noticed a significant drop in the number of female midshipmen coming in," said beautician Flo Jackson.

"Since we have opened Waves, there has been a tremendous pick-up in business."

On average, the beauty shop tends to get 40 customers a week, double the female clientele at the barbershop before Waves opened.

"It just felt weird going into a barbershop to get my hair done," said Midn. 1/C Alexis Kinney. "I definitely come more often since they opened Waves."

The beauticians are determined to help their clients find a place they can go to clear their heads while maintaining their professional appearances at affordable rates.

"Sometimes the females have a harder time adjusting to military life, so giving them the opportunity to relax and just talk makes them feel more comfortable with their new environment," said Clarke.

"It's the small things, like shampooing their hair or giving them a deep conditioning, that really brightens their day."

Such "small things" can have a big effect on a person's morale.

"I had heard about the deep conditioning from some of the other girls. I came in one day after having a bad day and I decided to get my hair deep conditioned," said Kinney.

"I left there feeling a lot better. When you feel good about your appearance, then it just makes you feel better about everything else."

As Waves' reputation grows throughout Bancroft Hall, more and more midshipmen are making appointments.

"This was my first visit to Waves since it opened," said Piraino, "but I plan to make it a weekly routine."

To make an appointment at Waves, visit the salon at 1st Wing.

Now really, how bad would facials and massages be after all that PAE, sailing, marching and swimming with the jelly fish? Soft skin does not mean soft innards!!! These gals are tough....why not look good (if even for only the briefest of moments) doing it! After all, all of 'em (males and females alike) get mud facials during sea trials already....why not make them available year round? Bettcha the guys would love it....nothing beats a warm mud pack and a good massage for strained muscles! (so much better then ice!) :)

usna09mom: read another article that mentioned "coloring", "highlighting" and "waxing" services.....will have to look for it again, but will post when I find it. The article mentioned men taking advantage of the services (waxing specifically) as well "after hours" (guess they need some privacy too!)

I guess the boys don't get anything.

That's equality for you.

wow that sounds amazing! :-) thanks for posting that!

hahah that is very exciting....sounds good to me!:)

What do you expect now that they have air conditioning? :D Those West Point women use camo for their facials.

zaphod: nah, the boys get their own barber shop.....red and white barber pole 'an all!

hahahha.....

i imagine, that girl plebes really dont' have much of a chance to go there though...unless they don't go home for holidays...

Maybe they're just trying to hide that which can't be fixed. :D

I know! I know! Only kidding! ;)

Zaphod, I really liked all of your other posts. ;) Good thing you're kidding. Anyway they can have their beauty shop, because we'll have the trophy. :)

You're going to need all that camo paint to hide the burning embarassment in your cheeks after we hand you your tails this weekend! ;)

"Anyway they can have their beauty shop, because we'll have the trophy"

mot: not for long! ;)

navy2010,
Thanks for the post. As mentioned previously, plebes who are varsity athletes (and even those who aren't) have little time for hair appointments. I've heard that being a midshipman or cadet is comparable to taking a full course load at Harvard/Yale/Stanford and working part-time. My daughter has trouble finding time to buy snacks during midstore hours. BTW, mid parents get to shop at the midstore and it has a wonderful selection of clothes and souvenirs.

The comparison I've heard is that it's the equivalent of taking 40+ course hours per semester.

Either way, I can assure you it's a bear!

As for the Midstore, I still cannot believe how awsome they've made that place. When I started in 1987, it was just the area immediately by the third wing parking lot (the area under first wing was where our lockers were). Now it's this HUGE place with all kinds of neat stuff. I can still recognize where the bookstore was, my locker room, and a few other places. Unreal, but COOL!

Can appreciate the course load these Mids carry on top of varsity sports....but one can always hope that when the going gets really tough, perhaps they will find a little respite admist the aroma of Paul Mitchell products instead of getting their hair "barbered" next to shaving cream and old spice! One can always hope! At least it is nice to know the gals have a place to go if they ever do get the time! (BTW- did see lots of plebes on town liberty on our last trip down- so you never know!)

Zaphod: when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping! :)
