a random question my mother and i were discussing that came up.

are girls allowed to wear make up at the academies?..... (well, more specifically, USNA & USAFA since those are the places i've applied and received LOA's to)

i figure no during plebe summer and/or BCT, but what about during the academic year? i'm sure there are rules regarding this, my family simply doesnt know and it happened to come up.

thanks!

[edit]

woohoo! the naval academy forum now has 400 threads! YAY :)

Yes, you are allowed to wear makeup. There is no prohibition on wearing it during plebe summer. However, as a practical matter, you will likely not have time to apply it nor will you want to wear it (you perspire a lot) other than perhaps on Sundays.

During the academic year, women generally wear makeup.

oh you can wear it during plebe summer? i heard that you couldn't . . . that's very good to know! on a similar note, what about those awesome military-issue glasses? most people have told me you're required to wear them during the summer, but i thought i read somewhere else that it was 'optional' or something . . . no, i'm not so much worried about 'looking pretty' during the summer as i am about the annoyingness of having glasses on my face, lol. thanks--

Yuck, makeup would be the last thing on my mind during plebe summer. All I wanted (needed) was my flat iron :/ ANYways we are allowed to wear it during the school year but keep it simple. No bright blue eyeshadow or going overboard with the eyeliner. You can wear your own glasses during ac year too. But honestly makeup really does not really make a difference with appearance. It's mosty how you put your hair up that is noticable.

More than some girls put their hair up sloppy, like when they quickly put it up to play basketball or something. As a plebe you're gonna need a lot of bobby pins and gel to keep the loose ends down since it will get to a point when it's too long to wear it down but too short to put up. Upperclass have more variety since they have long hair and can put it in twists or braids, etc.

Just be carefulr where you ladies get your hair cut. At NAPS, there was a rash of absolutely HIDEOUS haircuts done by the base butchers, er... barbers. The ones at USNA weren't much better.

I still remember the chop job they did to my friend Darla, and how beautiful she looked when she came back after Christmas break. She was a looker, but they managed to kill it with the do they gave her.

awesome....I have really curly hair haha. when they cut it short it is going to puff up...a lot. Looking on the bright side.....it will be SO MUCH EASIER to care for, and every other girl will be sporting the similar fashion lol. I was thinking about getting my hair cut before I-Day so could get used to it/figure out a way to tame it. If I get it cut beforehand will they cut it again there? The haircut is kinda like a mini right of passage isnt it? Should be an interesting look for me haha

I noticed last summer that most of the young women had their hair cut before they arrived for I-Day. They will not cut it again as long as it is above your collar. If your hair grows fast you might need a trim during the summer from the "butcher barbers" -- some do, some don't.

Not sure it this helps for very curly hair, but most seem to prefer a blunt cut that might not be so trendy but grows out much better than a layered short cut. As soon as plebe summer is over you can start growing it back out.

My daughter had her beautiful long, blonde hair cut by her stylist before she left for I-day. During Plebe Summer she had it trimmed once; now she is growing it out because it requires less maintenance when it is longer. Forget about makeup during Plebe Summer, other than Chap Stick and sun block, because you have no personal time and its unbearably hot and humid. We wondered about pierced ears. Many female mids, including my daughter, wear small gold ball earrings.

Hi usna-reject, will we be seeing you in San Diego? Hope things are going well for you this year!

no pearls on the Yard for Plebesters. My daughter didn't wear civilian clothes between June 29 and November 23! She made up for it once she got home, Uggs, cashmere sweaters, jewelry, perfume, music, DVDs, unadulterated fresh food...

(Plebes don't rate civilian clothes at their sponsor's house or in Bancroft Hall.)

okay thanks -- good thing i didn't invest in pearl studs yet lol. it would be too much to hope that my diamond studs would be allowed, although this summer the Marine Corps authorized wearing them in dress blues, you may not know. i guess i will be buying some beauuuuuuutiful gold studs! :-)

I strongly reccommend watching the internet cartoon made by the air force academy "Falcon Love" and you'll get the true vibe of how it's really like...

usna_reject: that's completely hilarious; thanks for putting that up! my parents will LOVE to see that . . . another reason to make fun of me when i'm there! thanks
