Girls Clothing and dorms at Phillips Academy Andover

I am entering PA in the fall as a new junior and I am beginning to accumulate clothes to bring. Is there any essential item for girls or a particular way people dress. I normally dress preppy but i'm just looking for help to see if there is any essential items that most people wear. I am used to a school with a dress code so this will be new for me. I can't seem to find any sort of list of what to bring, so I was also wondering how much clothing I need to bring.

Also, I know that I like privacy, but I also want to have a roommate because I do not know anyone. When I went for revisits, my host told me to request a 3 room double in Nathan Hale dorm. I like this idea a lot. I definitely would be miserable if I got put into a one room double, so I was checking off double on my housing card and then in the extra information section, putting that if It is not possible to be put in a 3 room double, that I would prefer a single. I was wondering if it is weird or snotty to be this specific on the housing card, because I definitely do not want to have that reputation with the housing officials or admissions offices. If anyone has any other housing suggestions please let me know!

They want to try to accommodate you asbest as possible. Don’t worry about being snotty, it wasn’t.

As for what to wear, go on to the handbook and look for the dress code, and then make sure that what you’re bringing fits into it, then look at what other people are wearing, be it on campus or on the website.

Agree ^. I have been the new kid for 2 years in a row (will be 3 years next year) and while I used the dress code each time as general guidelines for buying new clothes, I spent most of my time looking at pictures on the website, Facebook page, etc of what the kids were wearing. The dress code might say one thing, but look at the majority of the students’ clothing. Are they pushing the dress code? Do they abide by it perfectly? What are the styles that people are wearing? After looking at the dress code and comparing it to the pictures I get a general idea of what to wear. If the students seem to push the dress code in the pictures and you’re not totally comfortable with doing so as a new student right off the bat, find clothing that’s like a happy medium between what the kids are wearing and the dress code. Once you get to school you’ll figure out for sure what people wear and you can buy more clothing then. Weird strategy but it’s always worked pretty well for me.

Thank you, mrnephew, I just sent in my housing card! The trouble is there is no dress code so I have to get a lot of new clothes. I think I will take prepschoolwannab 's suggestion and look at photos!

You also might want to fish around for a Tumblr or other style blog specifically for PA- a lot of the schools have them. If you can’t find one for PA, a similar school’s blog (SPS, Exeter, Hotchkiss I know have them) might be able to guide you as well. These will have FAQs and lookbooks of styles. The website will also offer plenty of pictures to choose from.

I wouldn’t bring many clothes- enough to mix and match for a week or two between laundry cycles would be fine. Plenty of essentials, though, are good so you’re not forced to do small loads. And leave winter boots, jackets, etc. at home unless you’re international or from the West Coast; your parents can send you a box of them in October and you can send back fall clothes. And there are smaller items you’ll want at least one of- a swimsuit, a few nice dresses or skirts for dances and the occasional formal event, rain jacket. If you have some space, toss in some good “spirit” stuff. Most schools have a spirit week before they play their rival, so if you have space in your packing list, some traditional spirit stuff would be good. Stuff I’d recommend would be a tutu, some tiedyed stuff, a onesie (they come in handy!), etc- just fun stuff.

Make sure the spirit items are BLUE!

Also, I don’t think PA has a clothing Tumblr but they do have a FB page titled Faces of Andover (their version of HONY) and you can see what people are wearing through that.

thanks for all of the help!

Also, there are LOTS of stores with really cheap items if you start to make a collection now. You don’t need to get all of your clothes from Nike, J.Crew, Lilly Pulitzer, or Vineyard Vines. Also, with the cheaper stuff like spirit wear, places like Target, Marshall’s, or even CVS/Walgreens are great.

Are you allowed to wear stuff like Abercombie?

Of course.

Yay. :P

My daughter is an only child and will be a junior at PA. She wouldn’t mind the companionship, but it would be hard for her to share one room with another one or two girls. Any suggestions on the housing fronts? What are the 9th grade dorms?

@Andoverdad2018 I think the map at the back of the viewbook tells which dorms are 9th grade. The only one I know for sure is Nathan Hale.

Thank you @stargirl3‌

@Andoverdad2018 I’m not sure… let me know if I was right! And welcome to CC!

@Andoverdad2018 Andover is overenrolled next year, so expect that singles will turn into doubles and doubles into triples, so I am not sure that she will avoid the situation. Go with the positive. Andover does a pretty good job matching up roommates, so she will have an instant acquaintance, even if she does not turn out to be a BFF.

The junior (9th grade) girls dorms are:

Nathan Hale (40+ girls) – Pine Knoll Cluster
Isham (18 girls) – West Quad North Cluster
Double Brick House (14 girls) – Abbot Cluster
Hearsey House (5 girls) – Flagstaff Cluster

@skieurope: What about the guys? What are the names of the dorms/ capacity/location?

9th grade boys:

Rockwell House (~36 boys) - Split between West Quad North and West Quad South Clusters
America House (13 boys) - Abbott Cluster
French House (8 boys) - Abbott Cluster
Draper Cottage (7 boys) - Abbott Cluster

Thanks so much!
Do you go to Andover, @skieurope?

alright well you can honestly dress however you want here. this honestly includes anything and you tend to justify people’s choices based on where they’re from (aka kids not from New England who have no idea what even is Vineyard Vines aka me in the fall) so don’t be afraid to wear something really within your comfort zone or way out of it. definitely a good winter jacket and lighter jackets/fleeces to layer and or wear in transitional weather. a good pair of snow boots is essential along with gloves, hat, scarves, etc. also, if you’re a local boarder than don’t be hesitant to only bring fall clothes then switch out for winter and spring. most girls wear cute tops with jeans, skirts, shorts or leggings. bonus points of you have a patagonia! extra bonus points of you have a funky patterned one!! also, if you plan on being on a team sport you’re gonna have these things called psyches which is basically a day before or on your game that you dress up kinda wacky so bring a tutu, neon, random stuff. oh and bring nerdy red clothes because trust me and a ton (ok maybe not a ton) of cute blue clothes. online shopping is very helpful throughout the year when you just need something quick… definitely get some sort of space saving thing (to hang shoes in, boxes to put stuff in under your bed, etc). if you want a three room double in hale, just say “double, but not in the annex” the annex is where the one room doubles are. also, Isham is a great dorm because its really close to campus, has super spacious doubles, is the cleanest and is the most recently renovated freshman dorm and it is literally a hotel in comparison to ALL other dorms. good luck and go big blue!
