Girls? Guys? Social Scene at CMU?

Hello!
I am a recent admit to CMU and I am very excited to go there this august!
I had several questions regarding dating scene at cmu.
Do many undergrads date?
How are the girls?
How are the guys?
How is the hook-up scene?

Feel free to expand this discussion

LOL, there’s already a famous thread about girls at CMU.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university/956124-girls-cmu.html

College Pr0wler gives the girls at CMU a C+, but it honestly shouldn’t matter. If you can’t find a girlfriend at CMU, you could easily go to Pitt and try to get one there. If you can’t do that, there are five other colleges in Pittsburgh where you could potentially find a mate.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t plan to look for a girlfriend until senior year. With the enormous amount of work we’ll receive at CMU, its unlikely that we’ll have the time to commit to a serious relationship.

This has got to be the best question I’ve seen so far haha
CMU isn’t all about nerds sitting alone in their dark rooms and programming, and I’m sure that some of those nerds actually have gfs/bfs.
There is…a thing called “CMU goggles”, which you will “put on” after hanging around on campus too long. Warning about those goggles: objects are less attractive than they appear.
But honestly though, CMU does have parties (not as crazy as some big party schools, obviously), hookups happen, there is UPitt if you’re really desperate, and CMU is very welcome of LGBT community, in my opinion.
Also, engineering/cs girls go faster than good products do on Black Friday…
Boys… somebody once said: “the odds are good, but the goods are odd”. But it is not uncommon to see couples everywhere, so you shouldn’t worry.

@Fate, that’s what I told myself, as MAAAAAANY have, but orientation is where lots of relationships happen, and 90% of those last for years. Because so many CMUers are amazing, you will find yourself crushing on someone very very fast (if you go outside your room/cluster). And, if you’re a guy, and the girl you like has a crush on you, I see you going for her regardless.
I’m an ECE major, participating in band/buggy/sports, have a pretty good GPA for ECE, and in a relationship. I wasn’t looking for one AT ALL but sometimes it just comes your way, and you change your mind ;)

Freshman CS major here

Even though there are a good number of weird people at CMU, most people, are, in fact, normal. So yes, people have relationships. As long as if you don’t live in Hamerschlag or Scobell, the all male dorms (and maybe Mcgill, the all female dorm), you have a reasonable chance to get into a relationship. That said, even though I live in Hamerschlag, I still met girls who were interested in me, so I can only blame myself (and perhaps the CS courseload) for being single.

At the cmu parties I’ve been to, I haven’t really seen anyone hook-up. People do hook-up, though. Also, few people dance at CMU parties. Most parties that are intended to be dance oriented tend to be really boring.

no dancing or hook-ups? do they just stand around and drink or…?

You can enjoy a party without dancing or hooking-up. Most of the parties I’ve been to just to “hang-out,” and I still found them entertaining. Also, it seems really cliche to ask someone out at a party. Its as if you can’t make the effort to ask them out on your own time so you only do it when its convenient, like at a large party. I’m sure that someone you’d like to date would appreciate you asking them out anywhere else.

…you don’t necessarily want to date everyone that you hook up with, though.

hanging out sounds fun too. i was just curious c:

It’s honestly more fun if you go with a bunch of friends, then you play games together (you can also do that with others of course) and it’s more fun laughing at stupid things your friends do than the stupid things others do :P

^ Completely agree Selena731. I usually try to avoid doing stupid things at parties, but that’s just me :P

Update: You were right Selena731 xD. I’m in a new relationship and we’re playing the long-distance game.

Awww congratulations!
Did you guys meet at CMU?

Nah, we were working at the same company this summer :)
