Girls State-- American Legion

My daughter got nominated for this-- I’ve never heard of it before today. I’ve read some of the past threads, but does anyone have current experience they can share? I read that the American Legion is non-partisan, but I’ve also read that it tends to be politically and religiously conservative. Is Girls Camp welcoming to all on the political and religious or not religious spectrum? I think a week of debate and politics sounds amazing, but my daughter would be miserable if it was all one-sided politically. Thank you in advance.

In our state (Virginia) the speakers were all elected officials, so it will likely represent your state’s elected leadership.

My son did the boys version in Ohio last year and there were boys with a mix of views. But it was more about the political process than it was about any certain issue or viewpoint. It was a fantastic experience for him. I hope your daughter likes it if she goes.

My daughter did it in California, she LOVED it. She’s continued to work with the organization ever since. She’s in her 3rd year of college now. I know she would be volunteering as a counselor this summer, but she has an internship in NYC.

In CA, no issues with anyone’s politics or religion, etc. If anything my daughter’s group skewed more liberal. The quality of the alums who take a week of work every year to volunteer there was quite impressive.
