I'm going to the American Legion's Boy's State in MD. Is anyone else going to this program? Also, is it prestigious or a significant achievement for colleges? Thanks!

I've heard that it's looked upon favorably. I'm going from NJ.

Ah, that's cool. I'm kind of excited, but I have really no idea what to expect.

it's fun i did it last year and got pretty far in the elections.

best week of my life. i learned so much during the short week, both about the governmental process and not. the whole system of a student ran state creates an overall experience that lasts a life time. plus, the people in your city will definitely be your friends even after the program.

It's alright in some states. I would rather slit my wrists than go to Georgia's (Girl State). I was the runner up for my school and only due to the fact that I'm Jewish. Kind of put me off on the whole subject..

Hmm, I don't see how it is that prestigous sense anyone who can pay the registration fee can attend. I guess if you are sponsored by the local American Legion chapter or any other community-type sponsor, that might make it look more attractive on college applications.

In NJ at least that's the only way to get in...

I was actually picked to go, as a second place for a state contest. However, I'm really not big on Homosociality (I have guy friends, but I just don't think I would have enjoyed it that much) and one of my relatives was getting married during the same week, so the runner-up went instead.

I'll still be able to put it on my resume, though. ^^ I think you should go, it is pretty noteable.

Yea, in MD the American Legion pays for it. It's totally free for the participants.

In Illinois, you can go as long as someone sponsors you, which can include a parent or guardian. I looked at the New Jersey website and it mentions that the American Legion has to be involved in the process some way. So I guess different states have different rules.

in AZ the American Legion payed for you to go. So it was free which was nice.

Haha I heard about the Jefferson scandal at NJ Boys State...

It didn't happen, it was a rumor.

Seriously? But everyone was talking about it. And they said the American Legion investigated but decided to conclude that nothing had happened, probably because they didn't want to hurt their public image.

What makes you say it was a rumor?

I was at Jersey boy state. Everyone actually in Jefferson thought it happened in Washington. It started as a joke when someone called a friend outside Boys State, making a joke about the "homo" nature of the program. It was misunderstood and spread. No one was disciplined, or sent home.

great, the CA boys state site says: 404 not found
