Hi! I was selected as a delegate to go to Girls State in Florida this summer! I know that you can run for leadership positions and I know that at the end of the week two girls are selected to go to Girls Nation. I want to go to Girls Nation. It is right up my alley. But I couldn't find much online about it. What should I run for at Girls State this summer if I want to be selected to attend Girls Nation?

Hello, I’m going to Girls State in California this summer, so I’m in a similar situation. From what I’ve found, in most states its senator, in some its governor and one other position. I suggest you ask the people running Girls State as soon as you arrive this summer. Good luck and I hope you have fun!

First of all, congratulations! Girls State is an incredible experience and you will really enjoy it. I am a FL Girls State alumn and a Girls Nation alumn. I also served on the staff of both programs last summer. My best advice would be to just focus on enjoying your Girls State experience and if Girls Nation becomes an option for you, then great! If not, then you’ll still have enjoyed Girls State.
The selection process for GN varies by state but in FL girls are considered and selected from a wide variety of offices. My year the Speaker of the House and the Governor attended. However, I know a Senator, Representative, and a Page who have all attended in the last few years. There is no one path to GN. Instead, focus on and run for what you’re interested in and think you will be most successful doing. I wouldn’t ask staff about GN. I never mentioned it once to any other Girls Staters or staff members and didn’t even realize I was being considered until I was asked if I was available for that week. Asking only makes you look competitive and disingenuous.
Also keep in mind that you’ll be attending GS with 299 other girls who are also incredibly bright and driven. 1 in 150 girls will get to attend GN. While its great to aim high, don’t get so caught up in the potential of attending GN that your GS experience is ruined if you aren’t selected. Instead, enjoy the company of the girls around you and having experiences that you’ll never get again! Let me know if you have any other questions! Have a fantastic time, I’m so bummed that I can’t be there this summer.

In New Jersey, there is a separate election for two positions called “Girls Nation Senators”. Anybody EXCEPT governor can run for these two seats. (I really wanted to be governor and a girls nation senator, apparently since the positions are on the same ballot, you can’t run for both. I think that’s pretty stupid since the responsibilities of nation senators don’t even kick in until weeks later anyway but it is what it is.) There will be representatives chosen from each city I believe and more and more elections will happen until there is a final four. The staff at Girls State will interview the final four and decide which two will be “delegates” and which two will be “alternates”. The distinction between delegates and alternates is the same as before, delegates get to go and alternates can go if the delegates can’t, this decision is made by the staff and is not voted on.
anyone know about Girls State in Massachusetts? I’m going next month
