I am going to college in Upstate New York, and planning to go shopping for fall clothing. What types of clothing should I bring?

May I ask where in Upstate NY?
(Haha, people have a tendency to think Albany is upstate ;-) So I'm just curious where)

Either way: when it comes to the winters there, you DEFINATELY need a good warm thermal jacket (if you're north of Albany, if you're south of Albany, the cold isn't as bad there, but it still gets pretty chilly) If you're near Buffalo (still not really upstate ;-) then bringing something really warm'll work too)

Get jeans, boots (they do come in handy, believe it or not), sweaters, long sleeve shirts, just winter-y kind of things. Bring some gloves, and a hat. Not like a baseball hat, a snow-cap kind of hat. It'll help if you're in an area that gets -30 below wind chills and your ears freeze. Just avoid your summer clothing (aka: shorts) and you'll be fine. Even if you wear t-shirts all winter, what is most important is a good warm jacket, the gloves, possibly the boots, and the hat.

Best of luck to you! If you have anymore questions (I used to live up there so I'm pretty much an Upstate NY expert ;-)) let me know and I'll be glad to help you out if I can :)

Thanks! I'll be going to Ithaca, NY.

BOOTS! I'm going to Boston, and I finally have a good excuse to buy some cute furry boots. And bring a few pairs of gloves, because you will loose them.

hoodies are always a good idea if you want something warm/comfortable

I'm guessing you are either going to Cornell or Ithaca college?

It gets REALLY cold there and it will snow... alot (without snowdays of course) When I was there for a little bit they warned me about the snow that would come around october-november...

My bro goes to cornell and he had to walk around in snow all the time so his socks would be always wet... i would recommend some shoe that's good for walking in the snow.

Have boots but carry a small pair of shoes, like ballet slippers or something, to wear indoors. I live an hour east of Albany, and nothing is more annoying than having to wear boots inside all the time! (Unless you will have nowhere to put the boots when you take them off.) Buy a LOT of extra socks, but try to find the sidewalk where you can anyway. No open-toed shoes in the snow! This seems like common sense, but you'd be surprised how fast you can get frostbite. Wear a sweater with your jacket, because even inside it gets cold, and outside you'll be glad for whatever layers you can get. (Sweaters are cuter than wearing sweatshirts all the time >.<)I personally like opaque tights with skirts, but that's a taste thing, though it helps a lot when you are freezing but still want to wear a skirt. And besides the obvious no-shorts-in-winter, that's about it.

Hope I helped.

Edit: Yes, gloves too. Gloves that FIT, with a liner (no leather-on-skin or any of that). Otherwise your fingers will freeze.

I love my cold weather! X-D

Also while we are on topic, how can you be fashionable while wearing a lot of warm clothing?

Thin layers versus bulky sweaters or sweatshirts are almost always better. Refer above to my tights/skirt thing, if it applies to you. And wear color! Winter gets depressing enough without all the black and brown around. Other than that just keep up-to-date with the local trends.

Anyone have links to some cute boots or shoes for walking in snow?

thanks

Hey, I'm going to Ithaca too! :)

Apparently, most girls wear Uggs. I recently bought this: http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductDetails.aspx?gID=w&categoryID=283&productID=1634&model=Catalina+
, but I doubt it'll actually work in rain/snow... lol

Nordstroms has an awesome selection of cool winter boots. If you really want to splurge, get some Michael Kors or Pucci ones.

I agree with the poster who recommended tights with skirts. It's easy to get stuck in a rut with dark colors, pants, and boring hoodies. Liven it up with a bright jacket or scarf, and wear opaque or wool tights with cozy skirts and cute turtlenecks. Mini-skirts look adorable with boots and tights and fuzzy sweater and cute hat. Get lots of cool hats!!

Like everyone else said, layering is often cute and warm. Wear a tank top, a thermal long-sleeved shirt, a sweater, and a coat. Wear tights UNDER your pants. Talk about warm!!!

Whatever you do, don't even think about going for that A&F flip flops in the snow look. It is so ridiculous it can't even be put into words.

Don't worry. My bro really cares about his clothing and he manages to look fashionable despite the freezing cold there.

I was visiting East Coast schools with my best friend and her parents in the dead of winter. We were miserably cold. My friend was wearing long underwear AND tights under her jeans. Her mom thought she was looking pudgy and started lecturing her about eating less. She explained, "No, I'm not gaining weight, I'm just wearing three layers of clothing!"

i go to school in albany and i live in fl. seriously, i rarely used any of my thermals/long underwear. u get used to the cold. only when it was below 30 degrees i wore them, but this year's winter was warm.

waterproof boots is a MUST especially when it snows. when they shoveled the snow off the pathways on campus i wore sneakers. scarves were very useful and fun. never used a hat cuz it would mess up my hair, but my long hair was enought to keep me warm.

make sure u get good jackets/outwear. i have a wool one thats good for nicer occasions. my everyday jacket was a feather jacket which was awesomeee cuz it was so light but kept me really warm. i also have a big puffy adidas jacket which i alternated with the two others.

thongs, bras...only thing you need for NY.
