Girls Who Code 2015 Discussion

Hi!

This thread is for people that are participating in the Girls Who Code program this summer. I thought it’d be a fun way to connect and ask questions, etc etc. I’ll start off with a little introduction, I’m currently a sophomore, i’ll be a junior in fall 2015 and I’m going to be attending the Boston Microsoft program. I’m super excited! What programs/locations will you be attending? Also I read somewhere that GWC has two levels? Level 1 and level 2? Does anyone know about this? I don’t remember reading about it anywhere. Anyway, can’t wait to see where everyone is attending this summer!

bump

I’m a rising senior who will attend the program in DC. I am not really sure about the levels, but I know the DC program is sponsored by two separate companies (Lockheed Martin & BSA) but at the same location. Not sure if the the two interact. And maybe the levels are to separate those with basic experience with programming from the more advanced? I myself have only a basic understanding and if I was to be put in a class with the more advanced, I would probably slow them down, so the levels make sense in that way.

@UnicornDuchess Yeah I just saw now that apparently level 1 is for beginners and level 2 is for people who have background knowledge. I had experience with JavaScript and HTML and wrote that down on my application, but I’m not sure what level I am in. Someone said that it was said in their acceptance letter but I did not see it on my letter. anyway, the DC program sounds exciting!

@buddy16 Yes! We just had our orientation yesterday and I can already tell this is gonna be an amazing 7 weeks. I’m so glad I found this program.

Hey I am a rising sophomore who will be attending the NYC IBM program in a few days. Super excited. However, I’m not sure about the levels.

sounds awesome! i’m super excited as well @tabmas

I’m so glad too! my program starts july 6th, so one more week!! @UnicornDuchess

@buddy16 How did you like your first week?

it was so much fun! loving the program so far :slight_smile: @UnicornDuchess

@buddy16 That’s great! Have you met the CEO/founder yet? She was so awesome and even replied to our emails afterwards. And how are you liking the food? It’s definitely one of my favorite parts of this program :smiley:

@UnicornDuchess nooo! I’d love to meet her. Today we met a women who co-founded the Microsoft Research Center in Boston and she has so many degrees from these amazing schools. I loved hearing her talk. Honestly I’m a really picky eater so I usually bring a lunch but some people in the program like the food and some people don’t like it. They hired an okay caterer. I always eat on pizza day though :slight_smile: we’re also taking a field trip to Google this Friday which is just down the street, I’m super stoked. There’s so much more I want to talk about with you! Do you want to just message each other so we don’t spam this board? lol.

Hey guys, how strict is GWC with missing 1-2 weeks/ attendance in general? I committed to a program before GWC because I was waitlisted at GWC, but I ended up getting into GWC. I also paid for the program so if possible, I really want to attend it.

@drakonus They’re very strict about that, a girl in my group missed 2 days and they were pretty upset. The girl also missed a lot of valuable information. The minimum number of days you can miss is 2, it wouldn’t be possible to take off 1-2 weeks.

@buddy16 ok thanks!
