LOL!!!

Yeh that's true about not writing about yourself..

But I really don't know what I should write about .... who I should write about....

Think about someone who has influenced ur life. My friend whos into sciences wrote about Galileo. Another girl who loves music wrote about John Lennon. I'm really involved in my church so i wrote about one of my biggest heroes, C.S. Lewis

It's also cool to write about predictable people from an unusual standpoint. A guy I know whos applying as a transfer applicant wrote about Jesus and his influence on government

It's also cool to write about predictable people from an unusual standpoint. A guy I know whos applying as a transfer applicant wrote about Jesus and his influence on government. Are u applying ED II? Where else are u applying?

I am applying RD

I'm also applying to Brown, Chicago, Gtown, NYU, Oxy, BC, Wellesley, Wesleyan and Barnard.

I applied ED to Columbia and didn't get in..

I'm really unsure of who to write about in that essay!
And does it have to be about someone famous?

It totally doesnt have to be about someone famous. When the CMC rep. came to my school last year she said that one of her favorite essays was one a girl wrote about her mom. I also know a girl whos writing about her dad that passed away. Write about someone that u know a lot about so that it wont come off as something u just threw together

i guess cmc essay is pretty unique. there's virtually no limit to what u write about.
because i'm considering the 3/2 economics/engineering program, i wrote on John Maynard Keynes, although i doubt there are a lot ppl out there know who he is. but anyways, i totally blasted the current u.s. economic policies along the way, so it was a lot fun...

I actually considered writing about Keynes! I ended up writing about Donald Trump and it was basically a critique on his view of sucess and related it to my own success on my soccer team and Ralph Waldo Emerson's view of success. It worked, I got in early. So ya, it does seem like you can get away with a lot for the CMC essay.

Were we supposed to relate our essay to ourselves? The prompt didnt seem to ask for that, but if it helped u get in I may have approached this all wrong. Im nervous to change anything about my essay because my college counselors really really liked it, and it flows so nicely the way it is. Also, I know theres no maximum length, but does 1200 words sound obnoxiously long?

well, i discussed how the person in my essay was a leader, then i concluded his theories are outdated, and my plan to revise his theories, thus making myself a potential leader like him. sounds ambitious isn't it? but anyways, i think it's pretty good, i worked on it with my economics teacher for coupla weeks. it's the best essay i've written..

PVbebe1, if you're applying on line, your 1200 word essay will not be able to fit in!!!!
mine was like 800 words, and i still had to put part of it in the additional information part, and that's just ridiculous, on the other hand, if u submit it by paper, then u should have no problem...

The long essay is a vital part of your application. Since there are no limits, this is your chance to show your talent as a writer and a thinker. This is not an essay that you should rush; expect to spend a lot more than five hours on it.

On the technical side, you can submit the application online and send the long essay via email. I would recommend to send a hard copy of your essay -with all the nice formatting- when you submit the additional documents.

Make sure to read about the mission of CMC and its positions on education.Unless your guidance counselor knows CMC VERY well, I wouln't give him much credibility to rate your essay. Researching your subject with your teacher of Economics or Government is a good idea.

Do not forget to let your own voice speak.

Good luck.

Oh don't worry! 5 hours was the first draft of writing (not including researching, planning, and loooots of editting). Ive gone over it with my english teacher and another adult as well. This essay is getting so much care and meticulous inspection because I know it has to be perfect. CMC is my #1 choice- I'm giving this application and essay all ive got.
