The only reason I have so far is that it’s ranked #1 for undergraduate business.

The academics are far superior to most universities in the world (I know from many of your previous posts that you have something against penn but face it even if you don't think that penn should be #4 it still is a top 20 school which puts it in a league with the best universities in the world).

Wharton is amazing, no other UG business compares (same can be said about nursing)

You get to take classes taught by some of the most well known people in their fields - people with nobel prizes, etc.

The pre-professional atmosphere at penn helps prepare you for the real world...

If you want to go into business you have an advantage over every other student at every other university (i.e. I'm going to be a sophomore and this summer at an internship in NYC my bosses constantly pass over HYP seniors and give ME the projects because they know that I will do them better)

Penn is a well known university with recruiters in any industry (maybe not with the overall population but the people that matter know)

Good mix of academics & social life (very few other schools have this including Duke, Dartmouth, & Georgetown)

The school is comprised predominantly of people with personalities (unlike HYP which are schools that are plagued with dorky nerds whose sole activity in like is studying)

The campus is beautiful, historic, and lively (Note: west philly has improved greatly in the past 15 years due to gentrification)

If you're in wharton the average salary&bonus 10 years down the line is $446,478

If you're in wharton the average salary&bonus 10 years down the line is $446,478.

is this for wharton ungergrad alone. Wow that is incredible. Ppl success if not guranteed. My dad is an oral surgeon, hence doesn't have an MBA or law degree, just one of those doctors, and does very very very well and i am not being arrogant or pretentious, but I drive a BMW as my own care b/c of it and I am very thankful. Just go after what you think you will love doing one day--which my dad taught me and that is why he is so successful.

The Wharton salary statistic is slightly misleading in that the various salaries of business grads are highly non-uniform. Many graduates who go into general management make fewer than $200k. Then there are a few top investment bankers who make $20 mil+, which drives the average salary up. What really struck me was that according to the survey, Wharton BS grads who didn't pursue an MBA made for money in 15 years than those who did.

It's the only school I know of that offers food carts (i.e. hot, fresh, cheap, delicious food sold by vendors of every imaginable type) about every 5 yards of the campus ;)

And if that doesn't hit the spot, just remember, college + authentic Philly cheese steaks = score

^ Yes, I remember that from the Penn summer program that I was at last summer. There were street vendors all over the place during lunchtime. To answer the original poster, Penn is a very solid university. The academics are great, and the social atmosphere is lively as well. Penn is often called the social Ivy.

I challenge you to name one other top school that allows undergraduates to get dual degrees in business and engineering. And to save you some time, none of the other Ivies do.

^ MIT Sloan

Alright fine, here's the scoop: what makes Penn remarkable is its incredible diversity in many many forms, its action packed social atmosphere, its vibrant location, and the fact that almost every department from each of the 4 colleges is ranked top 10 academically.

buddy, Penn CAS doesn't have top 10 programs coming out of its ears, not that i am aware of?? who cares, i wanted to go to Penn so badly, and i got so ******, and life just ain't fair. My life is just over now......Cornell......:))!!

Cornell is a great school as well, definitely underrated

-Because the people going to Penn are some of the smartest people in America and in the world.
-Because Penn is the only Ivy with a full college experience (replete with an abundance of frat houses) and a real city
-Because the influence of business is inescapbable in any country with a market economy (which at this point means every country but Cuba and North Korea), and it is invaluable to get used to combining intellectualism and business now
-Because Penn has one of the best Asia departments in the world (it was the first Ivy to offer Asian studies, has focused on Asia since WWII, and historically has the highest percentage of Asian students)
-Okay that last one was just for me, because I'm an Asian studies guy
-Because Penn is in the Ivy League

Penn is number one because...they accepted me! :)
But seriously, Penn is the only school in the top 20 that gets slaamed by a lot of folks on these boards. I would imagine it's hard for people to accept the fact that it IS at # 4 (whether we choose to believe it or not) and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
So, Penn doesn't have a distinct name...I wish it did, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great school. Hey, it's still an Ivy (one of the first, I might add)

Penn has been on an upward trajectory for years but it will take some time for the public to recognize how much it has improved...and it will always be mistaken by the general public for Penn State...

dude, i think this guy is desperately seeking help on his Why Penn essay...

Penn is awesome because if you are not HYPS material you can still get into Penn and receive a top notch education.

^LOL, ok I was thinking the same exact thing, but nonetheless this is still a good thread. There are a lot of things about Penn I didn't know.

i was also thinking that from the start but I decided not to say anything so people would write in tons of stuff that would help me out too (even though I pretty much know what I'm going to write about).

Penn's SAS is an amazing school, and some people on these boards seem to focus only on Wharton, while SAS gets overshadowed. In response to the person who claimed that SAS "doesnt have top 10 departments coming out of its ears", I beg to differ. Penn's Anthropology department is ranked number 6 in the nation. Penn's Art History department is ranked 9th. Penn has amazing language programs and their French department is ranked 5th. Penn's Economics department is ranked 8th as is their English department. In addition, Penn's History, American Studies, Classical Studies, and Art and Design programs are known to be excellent, just to name a few. Those rankings (http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/publications/pdf/nrc_rankings_1995.pdf) are from 1995, by the way, and Penn's SAS has only improved since then. Penn is obviously a great place to go for business, but if you are interested at all the humanities, Penn's departments are very well known and highly ranked; dont overlook Penn's Arts and Sciences.

The Dean of SAS has publicly committed to bringing English and History into the top five departments in the nation...
