Give me reasons why UPenn is a good university

Way to go guys, you just gave this kid like a million ideas for the "Why Penn" essay. Good job.

Isn't it interesting...Penn is the ONLY Ivy that gets so much debate as to whether it's a great university or not. Penn is the only Ivy that will have doubters scratching their heads as to why it is ranked #4. You never hear this debate over Columbia, Brown, Cornell, or Dartmouth. I wonder why Penn attracts so much negative posts...??

And what's funny about all this questioning of if Penn is a great Ivy or not is that PENN WAS one of the FIRST and founding fathers of the Ivy League.

No man, look around the boards. You hear it about all of them. People are lame.

Yeah, I guess they don't have anything better to do or they weren't able to get in, or something like that...

penn is taking in kids from some of the top prep schools in good numbers. Some of these kids are cum laude types or top 10%. penn intake at some these schools recently has been in parallel with Har Yale and Pton.
Andover 2005, MA
Stevenson 2004, CA
Pingry 2005, NJ
Kent Place 2005, NJ
These schools on their web sites have placement data. Penn does will in line with HYP. It should HYPP.

I'm telling you, HYP^2 :P

I LIKE IT!!!!
Penn has hurdled over a ton of schools on recent years.

Wow, from a Princeton student! Of course, you do have just a little connection to Penn... :p

Of course :)

It should really be HYS. The acronym has no place for schools that practice strategic admissions. :)

LEGENDOFMAX stop posting in my screen name!!

Sure blame me rolls eyes

I'm really glad this post is on top when seniors are deciding where to apply, because Penn really is an awesome school and an awesome place to spend four years.

The doubt about Penn's prestige is ridiculous. Anyone who says Penn is not a fantastic school is ridiculous. Penn was the first university in the country, founded by Ben Franklin for crying out loud (and lemme tell ya, Ben is WAY cooler that John Harvard. What the heck did he ever do?). The rankings prove that Penn, qualitatively, is among the most elite schools in the US. Yes, Penn had a period in its history when it was not on the cutting edge of selectivity, but that period is long over, clearly evidenced by the bitter rejects that so often come and bash the school.

Penn is such a unique place, and now I'm going to attempt to find a post I made on why I chose Penn that might be helpful to people trying to decide where to apply this coming year.

I already posted this, but it took me like 7 mins to write, so I'm posting it again dammit.

I chose Penn because of a gut feeling I had while on campus talking to the students and faculty, but because I always feel the need to back up my decisions with sound reasoning, I mapped out three reasons very carefully on graph paper for why I chose Penn: People, Program, Place.

PEOPLE
I like the ED thing, because that means that at least 45% of people at Penn had Penn as their first choice, which really adds to the campus atmosphere. Also, the people in general were more friendly and down to earth than at other schools, it seemed. Penn also seemed more international. I like the idea of a large student body. Obviously, almost all Penn students are very smart, but they seemed socially adept as well. I saw them studying hard during the week, and having fun on weekends, which is how it should be. Penn students seemed to have a lot of spirit, which is awesome.

PROGRAM
I liked Penn's emphasis on practical education. I liked the preprofessionalism and the different undergraduate schools, but I also liked the one university policy and the unity that exists across campus. I felt Penn students were smarter than other students I came across at the other Ivies (no joke. they were also better looking.), and they also seemed street smart--I guess that comes with the West Philly territory. I like the fact that Penn is Ivy, yet it doesn't produce a negative envy-reaction when you tell people where you're going to college (and the less-educated types who think it is Penn State actually like you more when they think you are going to a more mainstream school). I knew at Penn I could get an elite education that would also be useful.

PLACE
The campus was amazing. So classic. You have the old Ivy League type buildings combined with the sixties high rises and West Philly buildings. Locust was amazing, and I selected my housing so that I might have the opportunity to walk on Locust every day to class. I also love Philly--its history, its central location, its atmosphere... Although West Philly was a little sketchy, I felt perfectly safe on campus, and I like the fact that Penn is in a real world environment, as oppose to a place like Palo Alto. Although I hear this "Penn Bubble" pretty much cuts you off from civilization, which is also fine by me at times. The button was also damn cool.

Anyway, long post. Those were just a few of my many reasons for choosing Penn.

Yeah well I chose Yale. Didn't give Penn even a moment's consideration.

"penn is taking in kids from some of the top prep schools in good numbers. Some of these kids are cum laude types or top 10%. penn intake at some these schools recently has been in parallel with Har Yale and Pton."

This is a rebuttal to BABA's illogical statement.

Let's take the Rickoid population. I'm sure you heard of the prestigious program called Research Science Institute (RSI).

Here are the numbers for RSI 2004:

harvard 24
mit 23
princeton 6
caltech 6
stanford 4
yale 3
penn 1

I stand my grounds.

this is what baba does...

"I claimed A to be true. Here are the sources which has nothing to do with the claim I'm making. In fact, it's a small sample collected at a high school to represent the interest of all high school students across the nation. In fact, none of the data presented in the source can justify my claim. I made many assumptions. I infered wrongly. But no one has to know that. I will construe it to justify why I'm making this statement, just because I'm delusional."

Just because you said it doesn't make it true darling.

This is from ForeverZero:

"You have to be a complete moron if you base a school's quality on how many students from a particular school attend. More people will attend USC because it's much easier to get in, not because people would rather go there than X University"

"Yeah well I chose Yale. Didn't give Penn even a moment's consideration."

You know, normally I'd be upset when one chooses yale over Penn, but in this case I'm not. Have fun at Yale, you'll fit in well there.

add to the fact that Penn has one of the best athletic programs in the ivy leagues!

I turned down Yale for Penn and I have no regrets.
