I'm wondering if anyone can weigh in on the experience of their GLBTQ child at Occidental. My concerns are around the culture and student experience for gay men at OXY, especially since I have heard that 90% of men join fraternities. Since my vision of the frat experience in college is, well...not particularly inclusive of gay students, I have concerns which are elevated by the fact that we are from the Northeast. Occidental is far away! My son visited last spring and loved everything about the campus. He is an excellent student is leaning toward applying ED this fall.

Oxy is definitely not 90% Frat, I believe it’s 10%. I can talk to my daughter but she’s just started her freshman year and I’m not sure how much she’ll know yet, but based on who she is, I’d say this is a very open, very liberal campus and I would expect it is very GLBT inclusive. Wish I had more definitives for you. But my daughter did ED and she got a great Merit Scholarship, so he decides to ED, I’d recommend it.

The most recent Oxy Common Data Set puts frat participation at only 12 to 13%.

There are only 3 frats here (one of which only has a couple people) and a co-ed housing. The 90% statistic is inaccurate.

SoCal is generally very LGBT+ friendly.
Frat participation is very low. I don’t know where you heard those numbers. Oxy is one of the most diverse and inclusive communities I’ve encountered.
