I'm a current freshman at OXY

And I'm happy to answer any questions about admissions/ academics/ social life :) I was in your shoes a year ago and didn't have anyone to answer my burning questions so ask away!

Hello!! Thanks for doing this for us
Just a few general things. I’m going to visit next Monday (which I hear is the Oxy spring break…) and I’m excited!

Number one, why did you choose Oxy? What were your other choices?
Do you feel like it’s very noticeable that there’s a much larger percentage of girls than guys?
Can you just tell me some general stuff about social life at Oxy? Good, bad, etc.
Favorite/least favorite parts about Oxy?

Thank you! You are a huge help.

Ok I chose Oxy because I wanted to stay close to home. I chose oxy over a couple cal states, Florida International, Howard and UC Merced.

There is a pretty equal amount of boys (there is a fairly large gay community) and girls.

I’ll be very honest about the social life at Oxy. It could be A LOT better. We have a couple dances here and there but after the first month of school not so many people go to them. It’s a struggle. But it depends on how important the social aspect of college is to you because there are some students here who don’t mind it. There is a joke at Oxy that says the only way an oxy dance/ function/ any social event is fun is if you go completely drunk.

But other than that the small classroom sizes, the great professors and all the opportunities that are presented to us because we are at a small college are great! Oxy does a great job in finding opportunities for any field of study your interested in, and the study abroad programs are awesome!!

I hope this helps a little. :)

@quebueno3: Why doesn’t Laura Tokuza (Int’l Admission Officer) reply to any of my emails? :‘(
I don’t even know if my financial aid documents have been received by her. :’(

Expeliarmus, did you try the general admissions email? Maybe that might work for you.
Ok that’s good information to know. There actually is not an equal proportion of guys to girls (it’s about 57% percent female). My sister at Chapman has the same thing and feels like it’s a problem. But I’m glad to know it’s not at Oxy.

So with the joke of a social life, is it still easy to meet people and make friends? Are people generally very friendly?

I think the best way to make fruends will be getting tight with the ppl who live in your dorm. It seems like all the close friend groups come from the same dorm. Its fairly easy to meet people, Oxy kids are pretty approachable.

Only thing is if you a minority, you may run into some difficulty. Other than that there are a couple clubs out there that create a pretty nice social atmosphere.

I think its key to get involved with stuff like that because Oxy isnt the school that will make that social aspect happen for you, YOU have to make more of an effort to find it.

Sounds pretty standard. What are you involved in?? Do you know anything about the Dance Team or Dance Production? Are the people on it nice/are they good?

Sorry to ask lots and lots of questions…I’ll definitely have much less once I actually visit next week…

I’m involved in a Spanish club and a club called SABOR which is for Latin American Students and a Film Club (I’m majoring in film).

I do actually know the girls on the dance team and they are pretty good! The actually just won the national competition, I think they got 3rd place!

The girls are very nice, they actually wanted me to dance with them but I didn’t think I would be able to make the time.

The dance production (which is different from the dance team) is great because it’s open to anyone and everyone with or without experience. You just sign up for what type of dance your interested in and (like a club) you just go on the days they have practice and prepare for the show. :)

I don’t mind all the questions! I’m happy to help!

Do you know anything about the California environment semester or anyone who did it? There is a little information on the website, but not much.

What do you do in the Spanish club?

Is there anywhere in the dorms to cook?

Um I don’t know too much about that program, like I haven’t met anyone who did it so I’m not sure of how great it is, I just know that its off campus.

In spanish club we just play board games in spanish and converse. Sounds boring but it’s actually pretty fun! I enjoy it!

And yes each dorm has a “common kitchen” with a stove and oven and sink. ANd your allowed to cook in there whenever you want! Each dorm has its own refrigerator and microwave.

How many out there are Asian? I mean the total some…and which country is the dominant one from asia???

I would say in my class there are about 50, there are a lot of kids actually from Taiwan who I personally know but I’m not really sure about the other nationalities.

What is the Math Major like, have you heard? Son is undecided but likes Math (a bit of computer sc), Physics and History. He is leaning towards teaching Math/Science/Tech.

Math isn’t one of the most popular majors here but if he is interested in any of those fields of study, Oxy is great because the small classroom sizes will provide him with the individual attention he’ll need to succeed. The professors are very personable and really accessible.

And there is a masters program for education! And I’ve heard its great!

Can you elaborate on this? As a prospective student and a minority, reading this kind of raised a red flag.

Yes, I’ll be very honest. There has been some racial problems on campus. There are groups such as the Black Student Union and Central American club/ Latino clubs but those groups only contain a small amount of members.

I’m a black female and I have had to deal with hearing racist jokes from classmates. There is a group called the Coalition which is a group of students who try to prevent things like this from happening, this group tries to bring attention to the administration to help solve these problems, but nothing is really done.

It’s just something that you have to get used to at a small liberal arts college. Minorities are very underrepresented.

Not to throw a dart into it. But this is actually one of the main reasons why I’m trying to transfer out. There is a HUGE lack of diversity. It makes dating/ partying/ and friend making a lot harder.

Sorry but this is the honest truth.

wow this changes everything, I was under the impression that Oxy was not only a pretty diverse school but an open-minded one as well.

I’m a black female as well, so your honesty is greatly appreciated. At least now if I get rejected I won’t feel nearly as bad about it.

Yes, and most of the black students feel the same way.

The upperclassman would say things like, “Oh don’t worry we all spent our first year at Oxy trying to transfer out but you’ll grow to like it.”

My whole thing is I didn’t want to waste two years of my college social life waiting for it to get better.

Just remember that almost every college has a small amount of black students, but even more so at a small liberal arts college. You just have to figure out how important a social life is in college to you and whether or not you can put up with not really having one.

Did you get scholarships for oxy? I want to choose it but the cost is a lot and I saw scholarships for obtaining a 3.0+ gpa and idk how hard it is to maintain. (going as bio major)
Also what percentage of the people there are asian (local)

Well I got a small scholarship $5,000 a year. But Im not sure about any others… and if your passionate about bio you will succeed but I heard its no joke and pretty hard.

The website says the school is about 18% asian, but i feel like thats a like I would say about 10%-11% asian is more accurate.
