Here’s a fun and interesting ranking to consider.

In a report that has just been released, the Global Language Monitor for the second year in a row has “ranked the nation’s colleges and universities according to [the frequency of] their appearance on the Internet, throughout the Blogosphere, as well [as] in the global print and electronic media.” The ranking is a rough measurement of the ‘buzz’ surrounding each institution and its ‘brand’. While Princeton comes in 8th on the list it’s position is more impressive than it might at first appear.

The methodology for counting in this analysis is based on simple references. Larger schools, with a greater number of graduates will tend to have a greater number of media references. In particular, professional schools of medicine, law and business generate the largest number of these references. As you look at this list, you’ll see that Princeton is the only school in the top twenty without professional schools and that the total number of students (undergraduate and graduate combined) that it sends into the world each year is the smallest by a large margin. Despite this, only seven schools in the U.S. are cited more frequently than Princeton. Were the count to exclude professional schools and focus only on undergraduate schools and graduate schools in the arts and sciences, Princeton would undoubtedly be significantly higher on the list.
