global studies

My wacko son has changed his mind about majors (of course he did, he isn't even in school yet!). He is talking about Global Studies with the Middle East Studies as one major, and French as his other major. Then he plans on taking enough computer science to minor in it, even though it is not allowed on his degree if he has a double major.

Is Middle Eastern Studies useful at all? I was thinking he should just double major in French and Computer Science, and take as much Arabic as he could fit in. That seems more practical, while still giving him a chance to do all the things he is interested in.

He is starting in French 305, so majoring in French won't be too hard for him, he doesn't have to take 101 through 202.

Well, I think, Middle Eastern Studies would be just as useful as French. (Maybe even more useful.)

I've actually given serious consideration to majoring in International Relations or Global Studies, and neither one of them really seems all that useful, in terms of job placement, unless you have the intentions of going to grad school.

Middle Eastern Studies could be useful to someone who wishes to take a security job in the government or diplomatic work. I'm guessing, though, that most competitive candidates for these jobs have grad school degrees.

Also, he could always go to law school after whatever he majors in.

Yes, permanent student seems to be what pops into my mind about this major!

He is interested in doing government security work. French is something he is passionate about, so he is definitely majoring in it as one of his majors. He feels like it fits with Arabic, since many of the Arabic speaking countries were French colonies (Morrocco, Algeria, Lebanon, etc)
