My daughter received her honors college acceptance yesterday. She is now waiting to hear from GWU, and will choose between the 2. Would love to hear from folks who live in the area ( we are from NY) what is the general vibe about George Washington? I personally like GMU but she wants to be in “the city”

@raclut & @triangle - Just curious - was a merit-based scholarship specifically mentioned in your honors college admissions letters? I know in the past some people were admitted into honors but did not receive any scholarship - not sure if that is still the case

S received his acceptance today for fall 2014 He is excited, one of his top choices.

I got my honors college acceptance letter today! (I’d been away in NYC and just returned home today, so it didn’t really come today, I just saw it today) Prior to my acceptance letter, I got a letter saying I would get a 4000$ scholarship spread out over four years.
I am excited, as George Mason is a good option for me. I am hoping to go into a musical theatre program, and the statistics of George Mason’s theatre BFA and musical theatre certificate are much better than that of most musical theatre programs, and George Mason is a much more academically strong school than most musical theatre degrees are housed in.

DeeDeeB, I am a graduate of GWU (for grad school) and my son is a sophomore honors college engineering student at GMU, so I thought I’d take a stab at answering your question above. I love both universities- of course with GWU you are right in the city in a prime location, but unfortunately you pay top dollar for that privilege. Cost was the big difference to us, but GMU’s quiet campus can feel nice, safe and walkable and you do have the free shuttle to the Metro to go downtown. My son loves the GMU honors college living learning community, has a nice community of friends, and always seems to have something to do on campus. He uses the free shuttle to get downtown for Redskins and Wizards games, even though he has a car (parking is a bear in DC). I’m sure your daughter could have a great experience at either college, and either college will prepare her well academically… so the main differences would be living downtown and the financial aspect… congrats on your daughter’s acceptance to the honors college!

Can you comment on whether your son would have been as happy at GMU if he had not be in the Honors Program?

Albclemom, I do think my son probably would have been happy at Mason even without the honors college. There are many other “living learning communities” Mason students can opt into to get a smaller group vibe within the university and live with people who share common interests (outdoor adventure, green living, leadership, global studies, etc.). Also the freshman have “President’s Park” an area of freshman dorms their own diner and facilities, so he probably would have found some other niche if not honors. He’s been happy with his non-honors classes as well as the honors classes, and has friends from his major who are not in honors as well. Recently he became involved with one of Mason’s cable network shows, and with a student group that creates web aps for the university. The previous year he was involved in a voter registration drive and played a lot of sports (one dorm floor against another, co-ed). Lots of stuff going on at Mason, one only has to be willing to get involved.

Great info bookmouse - thank you! We’re headed down next weekend to visit and have tickets to the Men’s baseketball game.

Has anyone received merit based scholarship letter yet?

Really freaking out about now. My son has a 3.48 un-weighted and a 4.28 weighted in IB with a 32 ACT and a 2120 SAT…I would think that those stats was scholarship worthy, but we hadn’t heard a thing yet.

The honors housing is very nice compared to the other freshman dorms. We attended the honors program and it was very nice (breakfast & lunch plus some freebies plus if you put your deposit in that day, you would get a free sweatshirt). DS did get an award of $4,000/year but chose to attend another school OOS (we are in-state) since it would be cheaper and probably a better fit.

GMU is about 20 min from DC and the suburbs around DC are GREAT. I live 5 min from DC and the suburbs around here are similar to the city.
Posted this to the wrong thread before. Do you think all the honors college letters have been delivered?
Bump
@gr8fldadd When I called about a week ago they told me they were sending out acceptances over the next 3 weeks.
I still haven’t gotten a letter or an email and I’m getting worried. I have a 4.19 weighted GPA, 2030 SAT, and 30 ACT. A boy at my school got in with a 3.8 weighted GPA, so I feel like I could get in. I emailed them just now asking if they’re still sending out letters/emails. I hope they respond soon.
My S got an email about the open house for honors but he had never gotten the letter
@AnImpAffliction i think u’ll get in. ur stats r really good!
