Go ahead and ask.

How much does it help if your brother went to Hogwarts, and did really well?

Also, ^ to the above post,
I’m not as smart as my brother, and my test scores and grades show.

Thanks for the input GemmaV. I agree that demonstrated enthusiasm is much more important than a piece of paper which could have been sent to Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang.

GammaV: I don’t know if your school has them or if you are familiar with them, but how do schools view parent statements. Since their optional does this mean they’re not important? Also, what does a school look for when it reads a parent statement?

How are applicants who decide to re-apply to hogwarts looked at compared to other students? Does Hogwarts keep an applicant’s file from the year before and compare aspects, looking for improvement?

Thanks again!!!

@bbc420: She touches on this in an earlier response…if I read it correctly, I think the parent statements help give context to the student responses.

just to add onto bbc420’s question…
would it be largely detrimental to skip parent statements? my parents aren’t fluent in English, so i don’t know how well they’d respond, or whether they’d be capable to at all.

DiveAlive, perhaps they could write their comments in their native language, and you could translate it? Or, they could supply their original statement, and their best guess at translation.

DiveAlive, this is just a suggestion, but maybe they could write it in their native language, and then you could help them translate it into english?

EDIT: Periwinkle beats me to it :P

heps, great minds think alike? I admit I’d be glad to think of a way to weasel out of the parent statements, but so far, no dice.

Thanks Gemma V for your response on helicopter parents, and a good laugh for the day too.

@Gemma, I have bad hand writing. Is it a good idea to attach a typed copy of my required handwritten essay as part of my application?

@maddog15: Yes, please.

@DiveAlive: I agree it would be a good idea to have parents write in whichever language they feel most comfortable, and we can always translate.

ANSWER: Yes, we keep last year’s file. Sometimes we compare them, but it’s a new year and a new applicant pool, so we really focus mostly on this year’s application. Nevertheless, I would not submit the same essay twice.

could you chance me?

I wonder if you could say anything about how you and your colleagues “put a class together”; obviously you’re looking for gender equity, geographic, economic & ethnic diversity, different types for different school roles (athletics, performing arts, etc.), but how do you gauge personalities–or “intangibles”-- in the application process?

Hi bbc420–it’s Gemma, not Gamma. :)

Parent statements are very important. It is interesting to read a parent’s reflection on his/her child–the parent, after all, knows the child best. Better than the English teacher, or guidance counselor, or interviewer. And sometimes, a parent can tell the child’s story better than the child can himself.

I appreciate it when parents can clarify something in the file that the admission committee might question, e.g. if a student missed a month of school in 7th grade due to a bout of mono. We would only see the high number of absences on his record, but it’s important for parents to provide that type of explanation. Perhaps a child’s grades slipped in 7th grade because the parents were going through a divorce at that time, but now that she’s in 8th grade, they’re back to normal. That type of thing.

I also think it is important for the admission committee to know that the parents’ values are in line with the institution’s, i.e. you’re interested in boarding school for your child for all the right reasons.
