My daughter attends a French lycee. Most all courses are taught in French. She receives 4 hours of ESL a week; subsequently, I have her taking CTY English courses on line. The ESL course is the only English course available at her school.

My question is this: What type of English teacher should write the recommendation? The CTY instructor (if she has the same one next year) or the ESL instructor?

Gemma… thank you for doing this. I appreciate the time you and other teachers/administrators spend answering questions.

exeterr and tmenon - not only is this NOT a chance thread, but GemmaV specifically said in an earlier post that she wishes the Chances Thread would cease to exist. Pay attention.

@Exeterrr and tmenon: this is not a chance thread, and Gemma has already made clear her disapproval of the chances forum for various reasons. If you want a bunch of [non-admissions] people tell you whether or not they think you’ll get in, go to the chances forum.

My question-How long do you expect a “short essay” to be?
(other than the obvious, “Long enough to answer the question, short enough to avoid boring the reader”)

ANSWER: Is the title of the section “short answer” or “short essay”? If the section of the application is titled “short answer” it should NOT be an essay. If there are word limits, I would try my best to stay within them. And…your “obvious” answer is the correct one.

No more chance threads. Please! Stop the insanity! This is not a chance thread, but general conversation with information provided by an AO, who is being NICE! Okay, here’s a question for Gemma. How can an applicant stand out, and yet, look like they fit in the with the rest of the boarding school culture of the school they are applying to. I think this is one of the great mysteries of the admission process. I see a school, that just screams “match” for my kid, he could hit the ground running. But how can he showcase that, and have you spot it too? How can he stand out to you, so that you see he will blend in nicely?

GemmaV, are you too busy to answer all questions or are you choosing which ones to answer? Thought my questioned weren’t asked by others and weren’t answered.

@DAndrew: I’ve been on and off the computer, so I don’t see them all in the order they come. Trying my best to answer as many as I can, but there are a lot and I don’t like how I have to click on each “page” to see them all! Thanks for your patience.

@Exeterrr and @tmenon: I would urge you, and all other prospective students, not to post any personal information about yourselves on the Internet.

That’s fine, GemmaV. Just wasn’t sure if I asked something you don’t feel comfortable answering. Sorry if I sounded impatient (I was nott), and thanks again for taking time to do this.

@GemmaV: If I think two essays I wrote for one school are really good, and I want to just change each one a little bit and use them for another school, would that be ok? Both prompts are similar. I don’t really want to say what the prompts are because then people might do the exact same thing as me.

I have a quick question (hopefully): if Hogwarts offers those optional personal rec forms/special interest rec forms, does submitting one raise a student’s chance? And does not submitting one lower it?

I’m actually asking a few questions representing a lot of other users.

1) Why are there less Canadians in these boarding schools? I noticed ACADEMY X(being a prestigious school) only has a mere 2% of Canadian students. Despite the extreme similarities, why doesn’t Canadian students take up more?

2) What if your English/mathematics teacher rejects your request for a recommendation and you are forced to ask your previous teacher for it but you have not informed the school? Should I inform the schools? If I don’t would that cause a total elimination of my application?

dum dum dum and the question that edges taboo~

3) How are Asian students viewed this year? Schools have told the world that they wanted more Chinese students in particular. True?

@GemmaV-
First of all, I would really like to thank you for giving prospective prep school students some insight.
If my teacher has not graded any full-length essays, is it acceptable to submit a power paragraph as a graded essay? I know I could submit an essay from last year, but what if I do not have one? In addition, I would like to know if we should put essay titles on the essays that have 400 words or more. Thanks a lot, again, and I hope you have a happy new year!
