Hi guys, this will be my first post, I am a buddy of bearcats who is a longtime poster here (he told me alexandre knows a lot btw). I have been browsing around and finally got my acts together to post. So first of all, HI EVERYONE!

Now, I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan majoring in Industrial and Operations Engineering. I slacked off freshman year and currently sitting at a dismal 3.24 gpa. I am working very hard this semester and am on track to bump it up to around 3.35-3.4. So assuming I successfully do it, I'll be at a 3.35-3.4 at the end of sophomore year. I am interested in consulting, Ibank and operations management (I dont want anything to do with engineering in my career, choosing U of M engineering over tepper was a huge mistake, right? I somehow thought the quantitative background could fasttrack myself to finance/management, stupid me).

Anyway, assuming things stay the same, I'll be applying for a full time job with 3.4 gpa Umich engineering degree at the beginning of my senior year. Assuming I have decent but not stellar experience and nothing really substantial in the business field.

What would my chance be of receiving an interview/offer from the top consulting firms(BCG, Mckinsey)? What would my chance be of receiving an interview/offer from the second tier(IBM, Accenture)? How bout regional/boutique consulting firms?

Same thing for ibanking, what would my chance be of receiving an interview/offer from the top banks (GS/MS/ML)? how bout the second tiers? How bout the regional, boutique trading firms?

and operations management, there arent like huge brand names and stuff..but do I have a chance of getting a sniff for those jobs (not operations process jobs at engineering places tho)

thanks a lot in advance, i realize it's a lot

I had a sub-3.5 GPA when I graduated from Michigan and I got offers from 3 IBanks. But I must admit I was lucky. Chosing Michigan Engineering over Tepper was not a mistake. You would probably have slacked off at Tepper too and CMU is not known to suffer fools. Consulting and IBanking is not for slackers. If you are serious about a career in Consulting or IBanking, you have to pay your dues. It is not too late mind you. You need to buckle down your Junior year. I suspect that you should be able to raise your GPA to 3.5 by the end of your Junior year, which should give you a shot at getting a good internship then. Even now is not too late mind you. A 3.3 GPA at the CoE is nothing to sneeze at. So definitely apply for internships. What will probably lock you out of an internship at the moment isn’t your GPA but your academic standing and the current economic climate. You are a Sophomore. Most IBanks and Consulting firms recruit Juniors. So keep applying and hope for the best, but at the same time try to manage your expectations. Try to get a summer internship with any company this summer, get as high a GPA as possible this term and next term and then you should be in a much better position come next summer.

alexandre…it’s 4am in the morning!!

well, if I get to 3.5 by end of junior year, it’d be too late to get an internship!

but my question mainly is… right now I dont have many good internship offers except for one at purdue as an investment intern at their endowment fund management office. Should I pass on that and fill my schedule up with 16 credits of cupcakes such as stats100 (being in IOE, I took IOE 265 and 366, while stats 100 a level lower than 265) and things like that to boost my gpa? I started a computer company with bearcats…could I just say I focused my whole summer on this startup venture so I decided not to pursue an internship (would companies buy that?)

You know bearcats? Heaven preserve us! LOL! Seriously, I would take that job with Purdue unless something else comes along. Work experience is always a psoitive. And I live in Dubai, it was 12:47 PM when I posted my first response.
