Going into Senior Year, chance me?

Objective: Some form of engineering
Gender: Male
Race: Caucasian
SAT score: 2100/1440 (composite) (superscore: 750 CR, 690 M, 660 W)
SAT 2 scores: Math 2- 770 and Biology/E- 380 (I bombed biology lol but if I want to send math 2, I have to send biology because I took them on the same day)
My school is ranked #28 for public schools in the U.S (location: NY)
Average: 96 (this isn’t impressive in my school as a lot of kids have 100+ averages)
Class Rank: My school doesn’t rank.
Academic downfalls: I messed up freshman and sophomore year in my math/science classes. I had 2 C’s in geometry, 1 C and 1 B in algebra 2/trig, and 2 Bs in chemistry. However, I picked up my act and got a 92 on the algebra 2/trig regent (required NYC test (its on my transcript) and 2 As in Pre-Calc Junior Year.
Classes taken and Senior Class load:
Freshman- Bio, Geometry, English, Pre-Engineering, Global History, Russian.
Sophomore- Chemistry, Algebra 2/Trig, AP World, Russian, English, SERP (Scientific and Engineering Research Program- this was voluntary and pretty hard to get into (14 out of 200 kids made it- I quit next year lol).
Junior- AP Environmental, AP Russian, AP U.S., Pre-Calc, English.
Senior- AP Physics, AP Pol Science, Calc, English.
4s on all my AP tests taken so far.
EC’s and Awards: Wrestling Freshman Year and Senior Year, Chess Team for 2 years, Key Club for 1 year, Over 180 hours volunteering at a pharmacy, Type 2 diabetes walk fund raiser, Took a psychology course at a college, UDACITY: Intro to Computer Science (Python) certificate, NHS, QOL research competition (this is a pretty big competition (all of NYC)) semi-finalist with creativity award, March of Dimes essay participant (Ethics in Medicine), AP Scholar award, Worked with a professor on a research paper called “The Effects of MI on Strength Gains”, and School Band for 4 years.

2 solid LORs.

Money isn’t an issue (going for an NROTC scholarship).

Chances for (all engineering): Purdue, Boston University, Northeastern, Penn State, University of Texas at Austin, Cornell (Ill apply just for the lols), UConn, Rutgers, and what other schools might look good? Thanks

UT is a reach because you’re out of state. And your SAT math section and math grades are a little low.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, the biggest thing that worries me is my math grades.

Why not the military academies?

Also add some SUNYs to your list

Thanks for the tips guys, it’s much appreciated. Also, sgopal2, I am applying to the Naval Academy. I have a separate thread for that lol

Where did you read that you have to send all scores from one day?

Google says the opposite

Yeah, I was wrong haha. Thanks for the clarification.

my friend had similar scores and slightly higher grades, got accepted into Penn state for engineering. You have WAY more awards/ extracurriculars.

OP:
You said “Academic downfalls: I messed up freshman and sophomore year in my math/science classes. I had 2 C’s in geometry, 1 C and 1 B in algebra 2/trig, and 2 Bs in chemistry. However, I picked up my act and got a 92 on the algebra 2/trig regent (required NYC test (its on my transcript)”

How do you have a 96 average with 3 C grades and 3 B grades?

Oh, it’s 96 weighted (my school doesn’t give out our unweighted grades). The reason they bump up our grades so much is because the classes are a lot harder than in just a regular high school (its #28 in the nation).

My understanding is that colleges un-weight your grades to get to your GPA in their eyes, and then consider rigor separately. My son’s HS doesn’t give out unweighted GPAs either, so we used the chart at the College Board website to recalculate his. Then we considered where he should apply. I don’t think we can link here, but it’s the first google result if you search “College Board GPA calculator”.

You can’t count on a NROTC scholarship to pay for your college, because they are harder to come by; often you’ll have to commit for a first year without scholarship and then only if you stick it out and do a good job in your militay/leadership classes are you eligible for a scholarship.
You have to ensure admission at some affordable universities first, so ask your parents how much they can’t contribute if NROTC doesn’t give you a scholarship for your first year. It’d probably be a good idea to apply to SUNY’s (Bing, SB, Buffalo?) for that purpose.
Penn State, Rutgers, UConn, and Purdue are all pretty certain for you as long as you apply by the priority deadline. I’d recommend applying to Honors College too. Purdue: you may not be in pre-major.
BU is a high match, Northeastern a reach by virtue of acceptance rate and UT Austin due to your being OOS.
