Going to a christian college if you're not religious

So this may be an odd question, but I was accepted to Belmont University, a Christian school in Nashville and am most likely going to go. Now before you ask why a non-religious girl would want to go to a christian college, keep in mind that it has the BEST music industry business major and a ton of connections within the industry. Now although I am not religious I have NO problem with religion, but I am am a very open-minded liberal person who happens to be openly gay(although not a butch in the least) and don't want to have to be in the closet during my college career. If anyone could offer me any insight or advice, or anyone who was in a similar situation, that would be really helpful.

Thanks!

Well, be mindful that Belmont recently accepted the resignation of its women’s basketball or volleyball or soccer coach for “coming out.” You might want to ask them about their policy re: students. I know the president has made a statement about this situation.

My guess is that you’d be viewed as no more a sinner than any other. But your chosen behavior would be viewed as such. And unlike secular institutions, no privilege granted for this choice nor any class protection as such.

You’re correct though … it is the best music/business major and college, but a block or 2 from Music Row, I believe. Lots of big time musicians and entertainment figures who’ve gone there, and tons more support players and management types.

thanks for the reply, although I’m confused as to why I would need any “privileges granted” for my “choice”

I’m a junior at Belmont , and a MB minor, so if you have any questions in general, feel free to PM me.

That being said, I’m agnostic, and very liberal. I wouldn’t worry too much about Belmont with the whole Christian aspect. You will run into some Christian people (freshman year I had a roommate that was very christian) but unless you room with them, you will pretty much be in completley separate circles. The Christian kids tend to stick together in Christian based groups.

A few things about the school from a Christian based prospective…

You will have to take two religion classes. Tanked my GPA with my first one  but thats because I got a bad prof who acted like I was already supposed to know the Bible. Check rate my professor before you take a religion class and you’ll be fine though, I just ignored it for a good time slot,so my mistake haha.

You will also have to have 10 convocation units in Christian Faith Development. Not so bad, I just text/bring homework through the whole thing since I’m not really interested, at all.

All professors hired by the university are required to be Christian so that they may “teach from the christian prospective” - I have NEVER had this be an issue/ feel too strong of a presence to where it makes them too bias on something

Good job on getting in! The curb college is selective

You won’t have to be in the closet, at all. Have you looked into Belmont Bridge Builders? It’s an entire LGBT friendly group on campus full of gay and straight people furthering the cause/creating a supportive environment. Besides for that fact, I know an openly gay couple where one of the guys is in a Frat and completley supported. I feel like if that group of guys can be cool with it, a lot of other people can be too. Of course you’ll always have some judgmental people, but I wouldn’t let it push you away from the university. Oh? and that soccer coach being fired thing… many students were livid and protested outside of the presidents office/lined campus…

Thanks for the reply! Are you a music business major as well? And if so, what are the internship opportunities like outside of Nashville, for instance LA, or New york ?

I’m a Music Business minor, I was originally a major but switched second semester to Public Relations (fell in love with it). Well, there is Belmont East-NY and West-LA, both which are very competitive. It seems as though the kids that go to east work with more editorial stuff, studios, etc and the kids that go to west end up doing more public relations or tv show stuff, media. I don’t know too many people that have done East, but I know people who did West that interned for Jay Leno and The Onion.

While there is no indication this Belmont student is homosexual, this Iowa newspaper piece lends some presumably interesting insight and POV on Belmont’s music and music biz program. Wish I could be the assistant to the assistant of Shania Twain!

^Haha she’s in all of my classes. Sweet girl.

One more anecdote …

Scotty is purportedly a very serious Christian … and heterosexual. And still thinking Belmont.
