Going to a "Christian" University when you are not raised with religion?

Then she’d automatically qualify for the UMaine Fort Kent scholarship! And as far as I can tell, it’s a direct entry program.
Check out Finlandia too, if she can withstand such a small school, it’s direct entry. Same for Chatham (not sure about scholarships there though).
Fingers crossed for Saturday!

We will check those out for sure

Have you run through the list of direct admit nursing programs another poster has collected on the nursing majors sub-forum? That might give you some ideas. I know Queen’s U in Charlotte has direct admit with a 25 ACT, as well as piles of merit aid for fairly modest stats. U of Toledo also gives tons of merit aid (I think with her current stats, she would qualify for in-state tuition), although they are not direct admit. They do, however, permit entry three times/year, including summer.

Just a note about terms: usually when people say that a college is a Christian college, they mean that it (more or less) integrates evangelical Protestant Christianity into its curriculum and campus life. This doesn’t mean that Catholic colleges (or colleges historically affiliated with other denominations) aren’t Christian. But it’s a shorthand term for colleges ranging from Liberty and Bob Jones to Wheaton (Illinois). As noted above, at some Christian colleges, non-Christian students won’t be admitted because of the requirement for an affirmation of faith as part of the admissions process, while at others, a non-Christian student will likely be unhappy because of the many restrictions and requirements that are based on a particular understanding of Christianity. Before applying to one of these schools, take a close look at the school website, and in particular look at the rules and regulations for students.

A more accurate term for this would be “conservative Protestant Christian” college. Narrowing the definition of “Christian” in this way may not be well understood, and may not be taken well by some others who consider themselves Christian.

@PAclgmom Thanks for the info in St. Vincent. I rarely get to hear reviews of it, but I know two kids who went there years ago and ended up with great opportunities after studying sciences there. It’s on the list but we haven’t had a chance to visit.

My D wants to study science and is Catholic so I think St. Vincent would be a good fit. But she wants a place where she would be free to bring both male and female friends to her room to hang out, not sleepover, just friend stuff. Is that possible at St. Vincent?

@planit - we are definitely doing that right now!

LU does not seem to mind loud rock music. Often plays at sporting events. Married students may have sex too.

That’s very interesting as according to their publicly available student guidebook, students who live on or off-campus are subjected to periodic dorm/home checks and given “demerits” for things such as possessing secular music recordings or even more interesting, those of many popular conservative Protestant Christian artists.

From perusing that handbook, LU was almost like a fundamentalist Christian themed military boarding school/academy.

I attended catholic schools and went to a Jesuit college. It had a liberal arts core so I did have to take two classes in religion. I took something on the old testament and the other class was on Hinduism, and Buddhism.

You’re right, which is why I always try to explain this shorthand usage when it comes up, to avoid wasting the time of both people who are looking for a “Christian” college and those who want to point out that Catholics are Christians.

Acts featured at LU Winterfest. Pretty rockish to me. Maybe that was an old guide. If you went to any sporting event on campus as I have you cannot tell it’s a Christian U. Except no drinking which is kinda nice–no fights, no puking in stands. At hockey games they play everything from J Geils to Queen to Aerosmith on the PA. I was a bit surprised at first.

LU Way Relaxed

barrons, I think those are all contemporary Christian bands, but from what I recall, that’s still a relaxation of Liberty’s rules–I think CCM was off-limits before.

Correct but still far from what other poster claimed. Unless you listen closely hard to tell CCM from current rock music.

Errrr… You don’t need to listen closely to realize it’s very different from current pop and rock music. (And I was a fan of jars of clay back in the day, but still wouldn’t listen to it if Jewish or atheist… And even for Christian youth it sounds “weird” unless you’re immersed in the environment where it sounds normal).

@toomanyteens Look at Wright State University for a direct-entry nursing program.

Now that you have me thinking, five of the seven schools my daughter applied to for direct-admission nursing have a religious founding or are proudly faith-based (Catholic). Interesting.

lmao that Washington post article could be an onion article about college. Only at Liberty are students brainwashed into thinking they’re lucky to be able to watch R rated movies.

Most go there by choice and have some basic moral convictions. They might just differ from yours.

Went to the LU football game last night. PA played mostly rock songs included Bon Jovi, Chicago, Aha, GNR etc and some newer heavy hip hop bands I dont know. Except for the lack of drunks and cursing you could not tell it wasnt any other college game anywhere. The girls (students) wore lots of versions of short shorts, tank tops, and Tshirts tied to show off bare midriffs–even some with tats and pierced navels. In other words hardly what you would expect of a strict stifling environment.
