Going to orientation without parents ?

Just got the date for New Student Orientation @ University Park for May 20. Its at 12:30 pm so I am going to take the mega bus or grey hound at 6 am and return the next day by bus. However, my parents are not willing to come with me mainly because of the cost and time it requires(2 days really?).

I don't know anyone going there so will I feel out of place ? Will it look weird to go there by myself ? I heard everyone brings at least one parent and there is a special program for parents only.

Well, compared to some places 2 days is normal…some of my buddies going to ECU here in NC have a 3 night orientation. But It says on the post card “although parents aren’t required” so I think you can get away with it, but you might feel kind of awkward if you don’t.

No, it won’t look weird. While most kids will have at least one parent with them, there are always some whose parents are unable or unwilling to attend. You might want to look around for a solo student and try to strike up conversation so you have somebody to hang with during the breaks and when walking from one site to the other (HUB to classroom bldg.) After the introductory sessions (essentially, Welcome to Penn State, Expectations, etc) they break out students, who go for a more academically oriented session, from parents, who get information about finances, housing, security, how not to be helicopter parents, etc. Be sure to pick up copies of whatever handouts they have for parents so you aren’t expected to answer all your parents’ questions - You’ll have enough to remember and think about with your own stuff. I hope your parents are familiar with University Park and State College, otherwise they are missing a great opportunity to get to know your amazing home for the next four years or so.

It doesn’t really matter since you will be with your parents for the first few hours only(not during the whole orientation). The only problem is your parents won’t be able to get familiar with the campus.

I heard that program is just for an hour or two. After that program, there is nothing much to do for parents.

I hope your parents are willing to come in move-in day.

My D’s orientation begins on Sunday 5/19. Anyone else get that date? That is better for us since we will miss only one day ( Monday) of work/school. I wouldn’t miss it for the world and have already booked the hotel. For all those staying overnight book those hotel rooms early.

Alright thanks everyone.

^5/19 at 12:30 pm ? 5/19 is Sunday so…thats odd.
I wonder why they gave me 5/20.

I booked mine on a Sunday too…the original date they gave me was a day before my graduation

I am confused now. Why do I have to go on Monday. I will be missing 2 days of school. It might be Sunday for out of state students and Monday for in-state students.

nevermind… i changed the date.

Are these May NSO dates for those starting in the summer, or also for fall starts?

It seems like all of them are for summer starters - because I don’t get an option to change it to May. My earliest date is June 4th.

I still haven’t gotten my date, any idea about how long after committing until you guys received em?

13pfaffb Did you take the placement test ? orientation.psu.edu and take the placement test. Then you should be able to check the date online.

Thank you, I actually took care of all that stuff after I posted, and found out my date. I should have deleted the post. Thanks tho!

I just took my placement test yesterday. Where online can I check my NSO date?

Go here https://vwapps.ais.psu.edu/cgi-bin/dus.exe/launch/FTCAPSchedule

Click change your NSO date. Before you choose a new date, it should tell you your original date. If you can’t you will get a postcard in the mail.
