I currently live in Michigan and am a high school senior. This fall I will be attending the University of Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is in Indiana, so I am wondering if, after I graduate in 4 years, will I still be considered "in-state" for Michigan colleges if I apply to graduate school? Or will going to school in Indiana forfeit my Michigan residency?

Also, my parents might move out of Michigan when I go to college, what would happen in this scenario?

I would like to keep my Michigan residency at all costs, so if there is anything specific I need to do during my undergraduate studies at Notre Dame (like not staying in Indiana during the summers maybe?) I would really like to know about it.

Hopefully someone here has dealt with a similar situation and can give me some insight.

You can. Just don’t change your permanent address. If your parents move out, can you register at a friend’s place or something?

Humor me and give me a reference. Cause I got a different impression from the University of Michigan’s website.

It says that everybody who graduated from an out-of-state college has to apply for in-state classification. If you look at the application, you’ll see that it explicitly asks about physical presence (not mailing or permanent address).

You’ll also see that everyone under 24 who has not been financially self-sufficient is considered dependent on their parents. If the OP’s parents move out of state while the OP is in college and the OP does not physically stay behind in Michigan, the OP would most likely lose his/her in-state status - or so the website suggests.

b@r!um is correct. I had to apply for the Michigan residency classification when I enrolled in Michigan because I attended an out-of-state university for my undergraduate studies. As long as your parents still remain in Michigan when you apply for graduate school, you should run into few problems. Waiting to attend graduate school when you’re 25 and older with a permanent Michigan address is another option too.

Got it. My mistake. Geez, Michigan is quite strict!
