Going to UCF on just stafford loans next year, is this a horrible idea?

I'm considering going to UCF next year as an A.A. transfer to study biology. By May I should have all my classes out of the way and ready to do the ole switcharoo. The problem is, I'm not one of those brilliant students who received a Bright Futures scholarship after high school, and with a 3.3 GPA, not sure if I'll be getting any merit scholarship in the near future either. So for my whole college career I've been relying completely on federal student loans to pay for my tuition, I'm just wondering if anyone else is doing the same so I can feel better about myself. My parents keep telling me to just go for the nursing school at the state college I'm in, but I refuse to have a career that has anything to do with bed-pans and confused old people.

How will u pay for tuition, room, board, books with stafford? What school are u at now. What career?

Federal loans are limited. If you are a dependent then the limit for Stafford is $5500 for a freshman, $6500 sophomore, $7500 3rd year and up with an aggregate limit of $31,000. If you are independent (generally aged 24 or more) then your are eligible for $4000 a year more.

"but I refuse to have a career that has anything to do with bed-pans and confused old people. "

Doesn’t sound like the RN’s I know. You should check out all the options if you can get in. There are usually long waiting lists for a reason.

7500 for 3rd year and up?? dang…that’s actually more than enough since I’m willing to commute, k bye.

What is your career goal?

My career goal is to finish graduate school and volunteer for the Peace Corps in forestry.

What is your career goal AFTER the Peace Corps? During your Peace Corps service, your Stafford loans will be deferred but you WILL have to pay them back once the PC ends.

And remember, entrance into the PC is not guaranteed. It is a competitive process.

There are A LOT of transfer scholarships even with your GPA. Which CC or SC do you attend? Seminole? Valencia? You need to check on their website. Check both for a scholarship page and for the Foundation page. There are full and partial tuition scholarships for transfer students going to university. And some are not given out each year because students don’t know about them or don’t apply. For those with financial need, and even for those who do not have a huge need, there are awards. Apply for any and every one.

For our local SC (state college), there is one main online app, then you browse all the individual awards and if you qualify to apply you just check a box and maybe add a little more info. Some are gender specific, some county specific, some major specific. But I suspect there are quite a few.

Dang, only one sign of optimism from sunnyflorida lol. I guess I should’ve been more specific than just grad school and the peace corps. I want to work in conservation biology for an environmental advocacy organization, and ever since high school I’ve always wanted to join the peace corps. I don’t plan on getting in the peace corps right away after grad school, I know you need some experience in field for an invitation, and loan deferment was never a reason why I wanted to join.
