DD was going to apply anyway but received a letter today saying that later this summer she would receive an application called the Golden Gopher Application. She would love to go here, is this something to get hopeful for?

My D is also intending to apply and also received the same letter. At least in past years, I have read, it was sent out to 30,000 students, and is more or less a marketing outreach to encourage more students to apply. It does seem like they did cull the list from students who had expressed an interest in UMN. Whether or not they restricted it to those met certain admissions criteria, I don’t know.

Has anyone who was sent this letter received any further information about this? DD received this letter six weeks ago now, but nothing else.

I also received a Golden Gopher application invite. I’ve since applied but haven’t received anything from them yet.

Last year, my daughter received a link to the Golden Gopher application by email. I don’t remember receiving a letter first. We went on a campus tour the previous Spring, and then we got the email link for the Golden Gopher application. She applied in early October, so I think we must have received the email sometime in September. Receiving a Golden Gopher application is definitely a good sign, but admission to Minnesota is getting very competitive. Here is a link that shows the academic profile for admitted Freshman for the 2013 semester:

Yangmaser - My daughter applied in early October and was admitted about 6 - 8 weeks later, near the end of November. She received notification that she received a scholarship on December 20th.

We are very impressed with the college thus far. My daughter has been down there a little bit over a week. She had an awesome Welcome Week and is in the 2nd day of classes. She’s loving it so far.

Good luck to all of you. Apply as early as you can because they have rolling admissions. The earlier you apply, the earlier you will hear whether or not you have been accepted.

Another tip that I want to give you is to apply for housing as soon as you can, even if you aren’t admitted yet. Last year they opened the housing application the end of November. You will be more likely to get your first choice of housing the earlier you apply. My daughter applied a couple of days after they opened the housing application, and she got her first choice for housing. She’s in an LLC and has so many girls from her floor in a lot of her classes.

If there is any chance your child will attend Minnesota, then definitely put your deposit in when the housing application opens up in November. It was $25 (non-refundable) and you can send in a deposit even if you haven’t been accepted yet. DS applied on the day it opened and got his first choice. He is in a LLC and in a suite – his first choice.

DS did not get a Golden Gopher application invite but he did received two scholarships from the school. It was the last school we visited and he chose to attend after the visit. Six inches of snow fell the day before we flew in and this was in April!!! The campus was snow covered so we didn’t see a whole lot. The campus was much more prettier when we went for orientation in June!

My D find the link to apply with Golden Gopher before receiving the packet. She is ready to submit the application but is waiting for the official notice of her National Merit Semifinalist status. That would be her first application to be submitted.
