Our daughter got an invite to join the Golden key Honour Society. Is this just a marketing thing (it costs $80, a clue....) or is a solid and legitimate organization?

I’ve never heard of it personally…[Golden Key Intnl Honour Society – worth it? | Ask MetaFilter](Golden Key Intnl Honour Society -- worth it? - goldenkey scholarship gradschool | Ask MetaFilter)

If it costs money, then it is just a pure marketing scheme. This is because a true Honors Society, such as the NHS does not ask you to pay money to join them, be wary of such schemes because I almost fell for the same thing.

No, this one is actually legit and not a marketing scam. There are Golden Key chapters at many prestigious universities including U Mich, Cornell, Penn, Pitt, BC, Syracuse, U Rochester, U Conn, Auburn, U Colorado, U Arizona and ASU.

By the way, having to pay a fee for membership in a college honorary society is quite common. It’s usually a one-time fee of $100 or less. The fee covers the cost of maintaining national and local administration (including a website or on-line directory for networking), a certificate and/or pin, magazine, perhaps honor cords for commencement, and similar benefits. Even Phi Beta Kappa charges a membership fee and certainly that’s a legitimate organization!

It’s good to be cautious and on the lookout for scams, but don’t simply dismiss all honor societies in the same breath as the scams. First check to see if there is a local chapter at your school or if it’s sponsored/endorsed by your school, what the specific selection criteria are, etc.
