Hi Everyone.
I am a 10th grade student with handicap of 6.
I’m an ib student, and my grades are usually 6s and 7s.
Can anyone tell me a bit about golf scholarships and playing golf for a college?
A little information about the requirements would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance!
It would help to know if you are male or female, a handicap of 6 as a male would be difficult to get on any D1 college team. The NCAA online has the academic requirements to become an athlete at any college, its more about what classes need to be taken rather than grades. Grades will be based on where you try to go. Golf scholarships are viewed as a head count sport, meaning each level (D1/D2) and then men or women get a certain amount of scholarships for the whole team (if they are fully funded). For example my son played D1 and his program was fully funded at 4.5 scholarships for the entire team. There were always at least 10 on the team. Some players had a full ride, others had a set dollar amount others got zilch… all based on performance. Women’s golf has more scholarships due to title 9. Can answer more specific questions if you want,
Golf is not a head count sport; what you have described above (splitting the scholarships among several students) is an “equivalency” sport. I see OP is looking at D1 schools, but if it is money you are looking for, you might consider D2 also as there could be more money available when combining athletic money and merit money.
To OP, check the NCAA requirements. The very basic requirements are that you have a minimum gps/SAT or ACT combo (varies for D1 and D2 but generally about a 2.3 gpa and 16 ACT/950 SAT). Of course, admission to many US colleges will require much higher than that. There are hundreds of schools with golf teams. The scholarships will vary, the strength of the schools will vary. If you want to play golf year round, look to the southern schools (Florida, Alabama, North Carolina) or the west (Ariz, Texas, California)
Yes equivalency sport, sorry got it backwards. I really want to know if OP is male or female as it will make a huge difference as far as a 6 handicap and what the college possibilities are
I am a male golfer with a handicap of 6. I’m only 15 right now so I guess I have time to improve. Momof2010 said that they look at the classes you take rather than the grades. Could you elaborate on that?
Here is a link for the academic requirements for the NCAA

From a golf perspective to be recruited to D1 you really need to be scratch or below and playing national level tournament and having regular rounds under par. At least if you are looking to get money. Don’t throw out the idea to look at d2/d3 and NAIA schools as well.
