Good/Bad?

She's on the Dance Team...they wear the black pants....and loves it. Teammates, coach, choreographer...all great! She's in a triple w/ two other girls who get along very well. One of her roommates is not happy at MD, so she may not be there in the spring. She says classes are "fine", never goes into much detail. Math is hard, but she's managing, just barely. Her most difficult class is Am. Studies, but she loves it and is possibly going to add that as a double major. Dance classes are fine....she hasn't really had many complaints at all. Thank goodness!

Now how do they decide if its cheering or dance team? Is it just two totally different areas?

They are two totally separate squads. Cheerleaders tryout for a spot on the either the Spirit or Competitive cheer squad. Dancers tryout for a spot on the Dance Team...the two don't really coexist. My d. has done both cheering and dancing in the past, but has been focused the last couple years just on dancing...and she was through with tumbling and all the extra tumbling classes required. But having a solid cheerleading background was VERY helpful and she has strong fundamentals. It's been a positive experience for her.

Great! I am glad she loves it! Is the spirit and competitive squads the one we see at the games..or are they two different squads?

I studied at UMd when I was in grad sch, but didn't attend. I do know a poli sci instrutor there, though... MD is a really fine school, georgeous campus (w/ a wide Georgian Mall w/ trees and waterfalls), and an esprit de corps center around rapidly rising academics, facilities and brighter and brighter kids... I spent some time in the D.C. area last summer, and I'm seeing more and more Terps T-shirts, car stickers, banners and the like. I think MD is really bringing a rah-rah Big-10ish atmosphere to normally stodgy/stuffy Ivy-League-ish D.C., ... and the town is loving it. It's much more "hip" to go to MD than it was even 5 years ago...

... And facilities? they are mushrooming. We actually took the tour, 2 years ago, when the awesome Smith PAC opened. This place almost single-handedly has put UMaryland on the map of bigtime music conservatories... Engineering is still excellent, and business is really growing strong... Maryland, by all accounts, would seem to be a very good choice.

The facilities are awesome! I was very impressed when we toured before D. accepted. The Clarice Smith performing arts center is gorgeous and the athletic facilities are incredible..etc etc..Its a lovely campus!

I too have a Freshman D at Maryland. She loves it!
To the OP, I think Maryland, or any school, is what you make of it. If you're coming from a high school with 40 people in your graduating class, then yes, Maryland is going to be a bit overwhelming at first. But and perhaps, because of its size, there are numerous opportunities to get involved in ecs and meet lots of people.
It's a great school, and if you are in-state, it's a bargain!

Anyone have anything about the business school? How do undergrads do when they graduate, and how are internships and jobs after college?

My D. is in the honors program and applying to the business school. Its very highly thought of. I dont know about jobs after graduation but with its close proximity to all the jobs and internships in DC it sure is a great location.
