Good Broward County High Schools

I strongly disagree with suze. When a school doesn't send many kids to ivys, there is a reason (and it dosen't mean less competition for you). If anything, the grading scale may be too harsh, the school may not have established relationships with the top schools and of course, money is always an issue. Stonemen Douglas has outstanding college acceptances however, you can only attend if you are within their boundary lines OR your parent is a teacher there. If you do not live in North Coral Springs or Parkland, apply for Nova Davie (public school).

OK right now I am thinking about Deerfield Beach, Nova, and Stoneman Douglas, but I am open to any suggestions.

Durimg the hurricane (I lost power for two weeks) my family also said that we are also considering Pinecrest. Does anyone know anything about that school. I know that it is an elite private school that sends many kids to ivies each year. But right now, Deerfield Beach is looking the most appealing school out of the four.

Does anyone know of any other private school in Broward county that could compare with Pinecrest in terms of college acceptances. I know of University School of Nova, North Broward Prep., and Westminster Academy, but I don't know how good these schools are.

The Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton has a good reputation. It is a parochial school (with a religion academic requirement) but accepts all denominations. It is very expensive...more than most area schools and caters to a ...."pretentiously wealthy population". If you don't mind that, I hear the academics are very good.

One other thing that you should know. North Broward Prep. offers some partial and full scholarships to incoming freshman. To be eligible, you need to take the SSAT and score a 98% on both math and verbal, and be recommended (get the form through North Broward) by one of your current teachers....if you make it through the first round, then you are asked to interview...final decisions are made in March or April. If you go to the school website, you can look up the details. www.nbps.org.
As I have told you before...if you are really Ivy material, you will get in regardless of which high school you attend. If you are only possibly or borderline Ivy material...then it may matter which high school you attend. Every school has its pluses and minuses. I have two children in high school at North Broward and they are happy there.

How much does North Broward Prep. cost and do they have any Ivy acceptances?

Pinecrest is ranked the 100th best Private School in the U.S....or you could go a little farther south into Miami and send your kid to Ransom Everglades School, which is the best school for Ivy acceptances in the Southeastern U.S. by quite a bit.

About SA, it's academics are indeed excellent and it is accepting of all dominations (altho chapels this year have a decidedly jesus/christian emphasis due to a new chaplain) . Although it has a pretty snobbish reputation, it is very exaggerated and can be avoided (just depends on who you hang out with). People here are very wealthy though and having your own car(often luxury) is normal. Its crazy expensive! 18K a year day students. 25-30K boarding (not sure) + books about 500 if u buy new. BUT there is a lot of financial aid available. I dont know the specifics but there are alot of ways that people who are not wealthy can go. It's alot of fun. School spirit, while lacking at football games (except homecoming) is strong at basketball games (won districts last year) and LACROSSE (dominates state) is huge here. The best thing about SA is the level of student-teacher interaction. You can go to extra help after school 3 days a week, math lab, etc. and you can talk to alot of teachers about non-school stuff. Boarders add alot of diversity and interest to student body but are a small perentage of student body. that's what comes to mind for now lol that was way long

o and our rival pinecrest has a slightly better academic rep. i would say. but both are great schools

Also, which program do Ivy universities recognize more, AP or IB?

North Broward costs about 15K a year plus book (700$+) and uniforms. But if you are so concerned about Ivy acceptance rates..then you perhaps you are "Ivy Material"...and you could get a full tuition scholarship to North Broward. If you cannot win the scholarship then, trust me, you wouldn't get into the Ivy league anyway.

Especially Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and MIT.

And the requirements for getting in.

the requirements for getting into NBPS is on the website as I said earlier. www.nbps.org It includes the usual SSAT, teacher recommendations, interview, etc.

North Broward Prep is having an Open house for prospective students this Sunday, November 13 at 2 pm. You should go and check it out. You would learn all you need to know then.

There was a survey of private schools nation wide about 2 years ago as to percentage of students getting into HYP, and the only two South Florida schools that appeared were Pinecrest (#100), and Ransom Everglades (#38)...

To the IB program I mean.

Right now, I am in the gifted program and have a GPA of 4.0. On the FCATS last year, I got a level four and a level five. Will I be able to get into the IB program?

Because if I can't then there is no point in going to Deerfield Beach.
