Good COLLEGES (not conservatories) for flute ;)

How about Jill Felber at UC Santa Barbara? has anyone heard of her? I went to a flute camp this summer with her. She is amazing!

I was going to do NFA, but I just have too many other pieces I'm working on. Isn't Gustnadoes Ahead! so cool!?

JMU is a solid musical school and a solid university but not great on either count.

I've done a masterclass with Jill Felber from UCSB! She's wonderful and an amazing player.
Isabelle Chapuis-Starr is at San Jose State University as well and Ransom Wilson is at Yale though I don't think it would be very easy to get a lesson with him!

I noticed that on the first page or so, a few people mentioned taking classes/lessons with local professors while attending the University of Chicago? Can anyone elaborate on that?

Case Western has a great teacher, Katie Dejongh, who my daughter studied with this summer. She loved her. Also...University of Iowa's Nicole Esposito...fantastic. Has anyone mentioned University of Texas' Marianne Gedigian? I have heard wonderful things about Kimberly Reighley at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. And of course there is Carnegie Mellon...;)

Does anyone have any information about the flute studio at Indiana Unviersity?

Notfromme, I don't know about the studio at IU, but I've heard wonderful things about their music program in general.
Also, Nina Perlove's at N. Kentucky U., but maybe I just remembered that because of all of her youtube real flute videos. But she seems like a nice lady!

wow - I love how the suggestions keep coming! I posted the question months ago - I haven't exactly frequented this board lately and I was so surprised! :)

Notfromme - I live in Iowa City, so I know Nicole (hahah, we're facebook friends! ;P), and she's heard me play in various competitions and such. Cool to hear her name on CC.

Mihan! Are you pursuing music now?!!? We spoke this summer while my d was at Interlochen, where she met Nicole. She has applied to Iowa because of Nicole. She loved her. Hope you are doing well! Keep us informed!

Hi, I noticed your post and was hoping you could share some information with me. I am a high school junior and my list right now has about 25ish schools on it, including all the ones you mentioned. What did you think of some of thier programs?
(I’m especially interested in Oberlin!)
Thanks!

sorry, that was to BEK by the way

notfromme, i noticed you said your daughter was at Interlochen? I’m VERY interested in going there this summer, because it sounds like an absoultely wonderful expierience, and I think it would really help prepare me for college auditions next year.
Do you have an information on it, such as the admissions process? Do you know the rate of acceptance?

Thanks!

Of all the schools you are considering, which flute profs have you spent time with? If you haven’t spent time with them, how do you know you’ll like them? 4 years is a long time to study with someone you don’t understand, or have problems learning from.

So, find where they are playing for summer festivals, and see if you can meet them for a lesson. Many profs will do this, and charge around $100.00 for the lesson. Money well spent, as you can see if you like them, and if their teaching style and playing makes sense.

My D changed her mind about several schools once she met and heard the ‘wonder prof’ in person. Her choices for grad school will be based on personal knowledge of the profs, and not just reputation.

Her current school is small, not mentioned in the ‘super’ lists, but still turns out amazing players. Yet, her studio has no grad program, and only 10 students or so, so the prof can concentrate on giving them what they need. Her graduates get admitted to the top graduate programs in performance because of their playing abilities. The prof is nationally respected by the ‘big-name’ flute profs, and her work professionally and academically speaks for itself.

Best of luck, but do your due diligence, and know what you are getting based on a personal knowledge, and not just a reputation.

I’ll chime in that the Interlochen experience will definitely help with preparing for your future and is a great networking opportunity. Good luck!

I’m looking for guidance about which of the University of California Schools have good Masters programs in Flute Performance. Please advise! Thanks so much.

Only thru 9-11?

Please note most of these posts are from 2008. The teachers may not even be at the colleges mentioned.

Perhaps a new thread on this subject should be started with more updated information.

If I recall only a few families went through the flute audition process this past spring, my family being one of them. We spent a significant amount of time researching around 25 schools, sample lessons, camps, masterclasses etc. and a dozen schools were applied to. It all worked out and my kid is thrilled with the teacher and school being attended. If anyone needs flute info I’d be happy to help answer your questions. Just pm me.
