Flute help!

hey everyone I am going into senior year of high school in the next month and I would like to know:
how competitive is the flute auditions?
do you think I should do live auditions or recorded ones? (because I'm an international student outside of the states/canada).

Any good programs that offer a double major in music performance and science? and how difficult would it be to get in?

Only ones I can think of at the moment:
(as for how hard they are to get into, i’m just talking about academically because i can’t really judge how hard getting into the conservatory would be for you if i’ve never heard you play)

IU - easy university, huge music school, don’t know about flute prof.
University of Michigan - top public uni, easy for michiganers, moderately hard for others, amaaaazing flute prof. from what i’ve heard
Northwestern - hardish uni to get into, but very expensive and they give little aid
Oberlin - awesome liberal arts school + conservatory if that’s what you’re into. admission is kinda hard but not impossible

I also know Columbia and Julliard do a dual program as well as New England Conservatory with Tufs and Harvard…but those are very, very difficult

You should talk to your private teacher about it, but they are very competitive, depending where you are planning to audition. You can double major if you are doing a BA or majoring in performance. Remember that there are a lot of flute players and that it’s one of the most competitive instruments. There are a lot of schools for music though…it just depends where you want to go. I think it’s better to do live auditions, but recorded ones are okay too…again, it depends where you are planning to audition.

There is much info here, some general, some specific and some esoteric. The search function is your friend… this may help: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/892168-search-tips-other-insights.html</a></p>

Flute admits at the noted programs are ridiculously competitive. Past participation at any number of high level immersion programs/competitions in conjunction with input from your private instructor is the best gauge of where you may lie within specific audition pools.

hi, mintchip. You are wise to work on this right now. I suggest reading ALL the CC threads you can find on flute and auditions. Also network with as many people as you can. You will gain tons of information and insight.
Any way you can fly in for NFA annual convention in Anaheim in a couple of weeks? If there is a way to do that, I would. It is informative and there is a presentation by flute professors each yr. Check out NFA website for details.
Any way you can visit some prospective teachers/schools? - They may give you direct answers about sending a CD instead of a live audition (though some places require live and some permit international applicants to send, but the question is, is this in your best interest?)
Aside from the actual audition, a lot of flute apps at university music schools and conservatories are pre-screened; this is the time to work on rep so you can do a strong recording this fall and mail it off to wherever you apply. Your final list of schools/apps may change, but you should try to get a handle on this quite soon and look at their rep.

thankyou all for the information!
also, do any of you happen to know of any international flute competitions these upcoming months?

Check out musical chairs website for competitions. Good luck!

Flute is among the most competitive instruments and getting into a top school is very difficult. The work then required is tough, and double-majoring in performance AND a science would be extremely hard, if it was permitted at all.

lawrence university allows you to do the double degree program and almost all students do.

Mint-
From everything I have heard, gaining admittance on the flute is very, very competitive and in many programs they admit very few each year from what I have heard.

With the joint program with Columbia and Juilliard, you could potentially get a science degree, because it is not a traditional joint degree, you get your UG from Columbia while taking lessons as Juilliard, then you get your masters from Juilliard (there are descriptions of the program on here, that is just a nutshell).

Some music programs allow joint degrees, some, like Bard , require it.

Depends how rich your parents are.

Practice HOURS every day to attempt a full-ride. Flute is the most competitive. Practice Moyse long tones consistently, and CHALLENGE yourself with insanely fast (yet even) technique exercises: scales, arpeggios, chromatic weird stuff, etc.

Don’t double major. Make life a little easier than what it is already.

Folks - this message started July 2010…
OP (mintchip) probably already their applications done and in for Fall 2011 admission

i know many music schools that are still accepting applications. also, other people looking at this post may have similar questions, so i figured i would respond :)
